The USS Merrimac was a collier built as the merchant ship Solveig in New Castle, England, in 1894. She was purchased by the Navy in April 1898, and began supplying coal to US warships operating off Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

Simon, Mike and I took off to fish the Merrimac. The place that we ended up in had plenty of carp, but there were so many roots and trees underwater that fighting these fish was extremely rough.
