The office of Virginia Senator Jim Webb says he's won the release of a US prisoner in Myanmar and met with detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. (Aug. 15)

Barack Obama has called on Myanmar's military rulers to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In Singapore on Saturday, Obama became the first US president ever to attend a meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN. That meeting was also attended by Myanmar's prime minister, General Thein Sein. Although the two men did not speak directly, as Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa reports, the fact they were in the same room signals a major shift in US engagement with Myanmar....

New images have emerged showing the construction of a series of secret tunnels in Myanmar, reportedly built with North Korean help. The images broadcast by the Democratic Voice of Burma in Oslo show tunnels large enough for heavy vehicles to drive through. Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa reports.

The Karen National Union, which is one of Myanmar's biggest rebel groups, has named a new leader following the murder of its chief. KNU general secretary, Mahn Sha, was shot dead at his home in the Thai border town of Mae Sot on Thursday. Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to another 18 months house arrest after she was found guilty of violating Myanmar's security laws. Her supporters say the expected verdict is the military government's way of keeping the opposition leader out of general elections next year. Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports.

Nine people were killed on Thursday. The victims include a Japanese news photographer. Kenji Nagai, 50, was shot dead on Thursday as he filmed demonstrations in the main city, Rangoon. TV footage has emerged which raises the possibility that he may have been deliberately targeted rather than caught in cross fire.

The village of Zin Pyun Gon, nestled in Myanmar's Ayeyarwaddy Delta, appears idyllic in at first glance. But the water that gives this community life also presents a serious threat to its health. While the water looks clean and tastes good, it actually contains arsenic, which over time can cause of range of serious health ailments. Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is facing the prospect of years in prison after being charged with breaching the conditions of her house arrest. Al Jazeera spoke to exiled Myanmar journalist Aung Zaw about the reasons for the charges.

Across Myanmar's Irrawaddy delta region, survivors are in desperate need of food, water and shelter. The first United Nations aid flights have started arriving in Myanmar - but supplies are still to reach many of the victims, as Al Jazeera's correspondent in Myanmar reports.

Fresh clashes between Myanmar troops and millitias near the border with China have resulted in the death of at least one person and forced as many as 30000 people to flee into China.
