Obama shifts US policy on Myanmar - 16 Nov 09

Barack Obama has called on Myanmar's military rulers to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In Singapore on Saturday, Obama became the first US president ever to attend a meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN. That meeting was also attended by Myanmar's prime minister, General Thein Sein. New images have emerged showing the construction of a series of secret tunnels in Myanmar, reportedly built with North Korean help. The images broadcast by the Democratic Voice of Burma in Oslo show tunnels large enough for heavy vehicles to drive through. Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa reports.

The Karen National Union, which is one of Myanmar's biggest rebel groups, has named a new leader following the murder of its chief. KNU general secretary, Mahn Sha, was shot dead at his home in the Thai border town of Mae Sot on Thursday. Myanmar court convicts Aung San Suu Kyi - 11 Aug 09

Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to another 18 months house arrest after she was found guilty of violating Myanmar's security laws. Myanmar's Army shoot and kill a Japanese news photographer

Nine people were killed on Thursday. The victims include a Japanese news photographer. Kenji Nagai, 50, was shot dead on Thursday as he filmed demonstrations in the main city, Rangoon. TV footage has emerged which raises the possibility that he may have been deliberately targeted rather than caught in cross fire.

UNICEF: Myanmar water threatened by arsenic contamination

The village of Zin Pyun Gon, nestled in Myanmar's Ayeyarwaddy Delta, appears idyllic in at first glance. But the water that gives this community life also presents a serious threat to its health. While the water looks clean and tastes good, it actually contains arsenic, which over time can cause of range of serious health ailments.
