SD40-2 videos

March 12, 2008: NS SD40-2 3430 with a 5-chime RRO Leslie horn, leads 94M, an empty tie train heading to Enola, with NS GP38-2 5000 in the rear. 94M makes an unexpected stop right in front of me, MW guys showed up in their trucks and inspected the car carrying the CAT grappler. Listen to that great idle action! SD40-2's sound amazing! So does the horn! Then the train powers up and continues its move into the sunset, enjoy!

It was a cold winter morning when I went out to my local rail yard. It was probably 40F, cold for us Mississippi folks, anyway, they were starting these babies up. Took about 3 hours for them to fill up the engines with water. Now, they're ready to fire'em up! Enjoy!

Using BLI sd40-2 locoomitves, I took them for a spin today.

Union Pacific 3467 might have a turbocharger problem as it leads another SD40-2 and 2 C30-7s westbound at Borie, WY 9/14/82. I thought that old railfan adage was "inside every GE is an Alco screaming to get out".

He has an excellent Ex Conrail C40-8 on the point, a leaser SD40-2 following and a catfish trailing. LISTEN TO THAT RS3L! I cant get enough it. Finally as I came back from my trip, I caught him again in my hometown, great luck eh? Enjoy.

March 24, 2008: Part 2, more runby's of the Burlington Northern SD40-2 FURX 8091 with the awesome loud K3LA horn, Conrail SD40-2 NS 3440 brings up the rear. H31 passes the 79.9 detector and the 81 signal tower. Finally, H31 arrives at its next shifting destination, Lebanon Chemical, just west of CP Prescott. There is a Part 3, H31 continues to shift at Lebanon Chemical, and sounds the K3LA, which sounds much louder for some reason, knocked me off my feet.

The second most numerous locomotive type in the CSX roster is the hardworking SD40-2. These locomotives come from all of CSX's parent roads - B&O, C&O, SCL, WM, Conrail, L&N etc.. These two trains show these engines still working hard with mainline freights. First is CSX Q226-17 with a load of new cars from Louisville, KY bound for Baltimore. CSX 8055 & 8053 are doing the duty on this train. Next is CSX Q276-26 another load of cars bound for Jessup, MD. Pulling this load is 8435 and 8336....

, IL. Yard was unbelievable. There's well over 40 engines in this scene. I couldn't believe my eyes. There's so much to look at. The temperature was below ten degrees today. The wind chill made it below zero. My hands and feet were in extreme pain when I got back into the car (even with gloves and boots). BRRRRR! CP SD40-2 6034 leads another CP SD40-2 5908 and GCFX SD40-2 3088 out of Portage. The enginner went through the notches pretty quick making for an unforgettable experience.

As a prototype, the SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the US and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run. The Burlington Northern amassed a fleet of 827 SD40-2's between 1972 and 1980. Right after the engineer blows for the road crossing, the dynamic brakes on UP3582 blows sky high with a loud bang. In the video I said "it looks like it blew it's turdocharger", but as UP3582 rolled past me I could see a hole and fire inside the dynamic brake grid with sparks and molten metal ...

This was my first CP SD40-2 :) So it turned out to be a good day.

Wow! I certainly did not expect this! BN Cascade green SD60M #9260 and Santa Fe Bluebonnet SD40-2 #6733 lead a northbound autorack train through Joliet, IL., on the BNSF Chillicothe Subdivision! This was a very nice lash-up and a very special treat! Filmed on January 13th, 2008.
