The Self-Governance of Tibet

Squished between super powers.. *As the world reacts to China's crackdown in Tibet, one country is conspicuous by both its centrality to the drama and its reticence over it. India, the land of asylum for the Dalai Lama and the angry young hotheads of the Tibetan Youth Congress, finds itself on the horns of a dilemma. On one hand, India is a democracy with a long tradition of allowing peaceful protest, including against foreign countries when their leaders come visiting. It provided refuge to the Dalai Lama when he fled Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959, granted asylum (and eventually Indian citizenship) to more than 110,000 Tibetan refugees, and permitted them to create a government-in-exile (one that India does not recognize) in the picturesque Himalayan hill town of Dharamsala.

Jean Tresch- property rights abuse in Alabama!

Update -- April 29th, 2008 The Marshal County Commission declared Jean Tresch's real property to be free from "junk," as defined by the county's "code enforcement officer." "BUT" - under "Limited Self-Governance," fines and court cost will automatically be reinstated if anyone files another complaint against Jean within the next twelve months. In this video Jean Tresch, resident of Marshall County - victim of "Limited Self-Governance", (LSG) is interviewed by Paul Brothers for the Marshall County Citizens for Property Rights organization. Fifteen counties across Alabama have deceptively enacted LSG through inadequate ballot language. 2008... Dedicated to the kupuna of Molokai who have kept the ancient wisdom and stories alive. Local Self Goivernance model for Indian cities 2

Residents of Kausambhi, Ghaziabad, UP are leading the nation by trying Local Self Governance Model in the cities of India. While Panchayat Raj system gives right for local governance to Villages of India, there is no such system for cities yet. Arvind Kejriwal, RTI crusader, is one of the resident of Kaushambi and part of the team leading the effort. It is an amazing effort as many residents personally came to Dharna , taking off from their work, to assert their rights to self-govern their area. After day-long Dharna and indifference by Commissioner and others, Police was called in the evening to throw us out. After intense parleys, written guarantees were given and Dharna was temporarily called off. It was decided to wait for action and reconvene if necessary.

Abkhazia Welcomes You

REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA Geography Abkhazia is situated on the Eastern Bank of the Black Sea, bordering to the West with Russia on the Psou River and to the East with Georgia on the Ingur River. On the North the Grand Caucasian Range. It has six main administrative regions: Gagra, Gudauta, Sukhum, Ochamchira, Tquarchal and Gal. The republic contains three National Parks in Pskhu-Gumista, Pitsunda-Mussera and Ritsa. Furthermore the country is rich in fresh water resources with many lakes and rivers. The climate is subtropical. People In the VIII century, the Abkhaz established one of the most influential states of the time - the Abkhaz Kingdom. In the XI century as a result of dynastic marriages, this state fragmented into several minor independent Kingdoms. At this stage until the XIX century, Abkhaz and Georgians coexisted in two separate and independent countries. In 1810 Abkhazia voluntarily became a protectorate of the Russian Empire. Until 1864 it preserved its statehood and system of self-governance in the form of a sovereign principality. As a result of the Russian-Circassian War in the middle of the XIX Century many Abkhaz like Adyghe, Shapsugh, Ubykh, Abaza and other indigenous nations had to flee to the Ottoman Empire. This period of deportation is called "Makhajyr". Approximately more than 250.000 Abkhaz were deported from Abkhazia to Turkey. Being demographically misbalanced Abkhazia had become a favourable territory for migration of other nations like Georgians to Abkhazia. After the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917, Georgia and Abkhazia took a way of creating two independent states, but in May 1918 the new Georgian Democratic Republic occupied and annexed Abkhazia. Prior to this occupation the Abkhaz National Council had been formed, actively developing regional state institutions in the Northern Caucasus and Southern Russia (Circassia). As a result of these processes, Abkhazia joined the Union of Mountainous Peoples of the North Caucasus, and then the Mountain Republic and the southeastern Union of Cossack Forces, Caucasian Mountain Peoples and Free Peoples of the Steppe. Hence, following the annexation of Abkhazia by Georgia, the leadership of the Mountain Republic issued a formal protest to the authorities of the Georgian Republic and Germany, whose troops had participated in the operation. Abkhazia led its liberation war against Georgia from 1918 till 1921. On the 4th of March 1921, the Georgian authorities in Abkhazia were overthrown by Abkhaz rebels; 'Kiaraz' movement. An independent Soviet Socialist Republic of Abkhazia was proclaimed on the 31st of March 1921. On the 21st of May 1921, the Revolutionary Committee of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic recognised the independence of Abkhazia. In December 1921 the Abkhaz SSR, under pressure from Stalin was forced into a Union Treaty with the Georgian SSR, which created the basis for state-legal relations between Abkhazia and Georgia. According to this treaty, the SSR of Georgia and the SSR of Abkhazia entered into a military, political and economic alliance. State-legal relations between Georgia and Abkhazia were based on the treaty, which provided equal rights. Following this the Abkhaz SSR took part in the establishment of the USSR. In this video (segment 1) Moss Dalrymple now deceased, was a resident of Marshall County and a victim of "Limited Self-Governance" (LSG). This sad saga is poignantly discussed by a friend and neighbor of more than 20 years standing. CHAMORRO TRIBE, INC. INITIATES EDUCATIONAL MEETINGS REGARDING THE POLITICAL STATUS OF CHAMORRO PEOPLE. CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS IN RELATION TO THE RIGHTS OF NATIVE INHABITANTS IN NON-SELF GOVERNING TRUST TERRITORIES AND U.S.C. TITLE 25 INDIAN ACT IN RELATION TO GUAM. The purpose of the tribe is to plan, implement, administer the development for self-determination, promote and study the Chamorro heritage and culture and to improve the quality of life for the Chamorro people and it is their intent to pursue Federal Registration as a Native American Tribe. In 1898, the Treaty of Paris placed in the hands of the United States Congress full powers politically to determine the political status of native inhabitants of the island of Guam. In 1975, the Helsinki Accord was agreed between United States and European Nations wherein as part of the agreement the Untied States Government in treaty with European Nations agreed to allow and promote Self Governance to Native American Tribes and Native Inhabitants in the territories under its control. In 1995 the United States Congress exercised it's authority over the native inhabitants of Guam and it's territories under it's control according to the Treaty of 1898 and amended Title 25 of the United States Code to include Guam under the definitions of State thereby giving authority to the Secretary of the Department of Interior to recognize and register the native inhabitants of Guam as a Native American Tribe. In 2005, the Chamorro Tribe, A Non-Profit Corporation registered its Articles and By-Laws in the Territory of Guam under Charter#: D14918. They are currently hosting Educational Meetings regarding its quest for Cultural Self Preservation every Saturday evening at 6:30pm in the village of Dededo. According to the Chairman of the Chamorro Tribe, Frank J. Schacher, quote "one of the most important things that we can garner as a Native American Tribe is true U.S. Citizenship. Right now, we are Statutory Citizens that means we received our citizenship through the passage of the Organic Act. The Organic Act is United States Code 48 Section 8A. Unfortunately, Article 14 of the United States Constitution has never been amended to include citizenship of unincorporated territories. Because Article 14 Line 1 of the United States Constitution states there are only two ways to be a United States Citizen, you are either born a citizen or you are naturalized. You cannot be naturalized as a statutory citizen. Only certain Amendments of the Constitution and those Amendments that the Supreme Court recognize as being Basic Human Rights apply to us. The only true way for Guam and the Chamorro people to get United States true citizenship, which means full protection and full Constitutional rights, is either Guam becomes a State, which is not going to happen because we do not have the population base and we are too far from the contiguous 48 States. The only other way for us to get Constitutional citizenship is to become registered as a native American tribe so that we as a people become incorporated to the United States and the Indian Naturalization Act would automatically Naturalize us, thereby, making us legal Constitutional citizens of the United States and affording us all protections and rights under the Constitution of the Untied States and making us eligible for all types of benefits as well as giving us additional constitutional rights, because Native Americans enjoy more Constitutional rights than regular Americans. Native Americans have the Constitutional right to discriminate based on race to protect their culture, heritage and race." end quote.

A couple things that got lost in the shuffle.

Obama Meets O'Reilly: No One Dies!

Barack Obama sat down to an interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly on Fox tonight and - shockingly - it looked like a TV interview. Though he was speaking with Democrats' most reviled host on their most disparaged network, no one Photoshopped his head onto Osama bin Laden's body or produced Jeremiah Wright from behind a secret panel. Instead - in the first of four segments designed to milk the interview - Obama had a combative but respectful back-and-forth with O'Reilly, tonight on the subject of national security. O'Reilly asked first if Obama believed we are in a "war on terror," a kind of semantic loyalty oath to see if he would hedge on the term. "Absolutely," he said. O'Reilly led him through questions on Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq, occasionally bickering with Obama ("You're not going to send ground troops [into Pakistan], and you know it!") or making a pronouncement without asking a question. Obama pressed his case that the war in Iraq had misdirected America's resources, saying that the surge had worked "beyond our wildest dreams" but placing that in the context of the cost of the preceding five years of the war and reminding O'Reilly that the Iraqis have not yet stepped up to self-governance. (And, in what was probably an intentional dig at McCain, making the point that he knew the distinction between Sunni and Shi'a.) Obama's visit came in a campaign notable for candidates avoiding various media. Most Democratic candidates, including Obama, largely shunned Fox during the primaries. (Obama has gone on Fox News Sunday.) John McCain canceled on Larry King earlier this week to punish CNN for Campbell Brown's having dared to ask a McCain aide too many follow-up questions about Sarah Palin's foreign policy credentials. And Palin, thus far, has been avoiding all national media interviews, save one with People magazine. Michael Wolff reports in the current Vanity Fair that Obama's rapprochement with Fox happened after an air-clearing meeting with Rupert Murdoch and Fox News chief Roger Ailes. And it's about time. For God's sake, if you think it's in America's interest to speak to international adversaries, you ought to be able to sit down with a guy whose TV show you don't like. The Democratic argument against "legitimizing" Fox News by appearing was as ridiculous as McCain's snub of softballer King and Palin's residency in the Candidate Protection Program - and politically counterproductive, to boot. Is Fox Karl Rove's new home? Fine. Did it flog the Wright story, call Michelle Obama "baby mama" and suggest a "terrorist fist bump"? Sure. Did O'Reilly get in a scuffle with an Obama staffer on a New Hampshire rope line? Hey, who hasn't? The fact remains that - according to Pew Research - over half of Fox News' audience members are Democrats or Independents. Their votes are legitimate, whether Fox News is or not. And to continue to freeze out Fox would go against one of Obama's most consistent messages: that people are sick of red-vs.-blue America divisions and that we should be able to talk with people who disagree with us. In that sense, Obama made his strongest argument simply by showing up. O'Reilly at least gave Obama props for that. In typical O'Reillian fashion, the host had two analysts on immediately after the segment, essentially to assess how well he had interviewed Obama (verdict: great!), and O'Reilly praised him for coming onto the show. "He's a tough guy, Obama ... I looked at him eye to eye - he's not a wimpy guy." Obama, after all, had stared down Papa Bear. And in the No-Spin Zone, that's the greatest leadership credential of all. View this article on Time.com
