Handel - Serse "Ombra mai fu" - Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson

"Ombra mai fu" from Serse/Xerxes, HWV40 by George Frideric Handel Libretto: ?; After Silvio Stampiglia, 1694, from Niccolo Minato, 1654 Composed: 26 December 1737 - 14 February 1738 http://www.haendel.it/composizioni/libretti/pdf/serse.pdf http://www.librettidopera.it/serse/serse.html Score (without the recitative): http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/e/e3/Han-omb.pdf Premiere: 15 April 1738: London, King's Theatre, Haymarket (5 performances to 2 May) Premiere Cast: (Conductor: - ) Serse (soprano castrato): Gaetano Majorano (Caffarelli) Arsamene (alto): Maria Antonia Marchesini (La Lucchesina) Amastre (contralto): Antonia Maria Merighi Romilda (soprano): Elisabeth Duparc (La Francesina) Atalanta (soprano): Margherita Chimenti (La Droghierina) Ariodate (bass): Antonio Montagnana Elviro (bass): Antonio Lottini In this recording: Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment Conductor: Harry Bicket Label: AVIE Records Recorded: 24, 26 August 2003, Blackheath Concert Halls, London (Theodora and Serse) A review on this recording: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2004/July04/Handel_Lieberson.htm From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Serse (Xerxes, HWV40) is an opera seria by George Frideric Handel. The libretto is adapted by an unknown hand from that by Silvio Stampiglia for an earlier opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini. Stampiglia's libretto was itself based on one by Nicolò Minato that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654. Serse is considered Handel's most Mozartian opera, and one of his finest. Passion is mixed with farce and satire; the folly of human nature is exposed but never ridiculed. The opera is set in Persia in 480 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia, though there is little in either the libretto or music that is relevant to that setting. Xerxes is a pants role; that is, it is a male role played by a mezzo-soprano.The opening aria, "Ombra mai fu", sung by Xerxes to a tree (Platanus orientalis), is set to one of Handel's best-known melodies, and is often played in an orchestral arrangement, known as Handel's "largo" (despite being marked "larghetto" in the score). The opera was a commercial failure, lasting only five performances in London after its premiere. In the 19th century, however, the aria was rediscovered and became one of Handel's best-known pieces. It has often been arranged for other instruments, including solo organ, solo piano, violin and piano, and groups of strings, often with the full title "Largo from Xerxes." Handel adapted the aria from the setting by Bononcini who, in turn, adapted it from the setting by Francesco Cavalli. All three composers had produced settings of the same opera libretto by Niccolò Minato. Original text: Ombra mai fu di vegetabile, cara ed amabile, soave più. Translation: Never was there made a shade of a plant dear and loving, or more gentle.

"Quella che tutta fé" (Ann Hallenberg, "Serse")

From Handel's serio-comic opera, "Serse": Arsamene's servant, the cowardly buffoon Elviro (Italian bass Matteo Peirone) reports to Arsamene (Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg) that Romilda has already given her heart to Arsamene's brother, the tyrant King Serse, who has just banished Arsamene from the palace. Hallenberg expresses with a moving delicacy Arsamene's sadness and deep frustration on learning of the supposed infidelity of his betrothed in this melancholic siciliano. (The King's guards take Arsamene away afterwards.) Recitative and aria. "Quella che tutta fé / per me languia d'amore, / no che più mia non è, / perduto ho il core. Che pensa il ciel, che fa? / Non sa col suo rigore / punir chi reo se n' va / di tanto errore." - "The very woman who pined for me / so unswervingly truthful / is no longer mine / and my heart is lost. What will you do now, ye heavens? / Do you not know that anyone / gulity of such transgression / deserves your implacable rage?" With Christophe Rousset directing Les Talens Lyriques. "Sì, la voglio e l'otterò!" (Hallenberg, Rasmussen, "Serse")

From Handel's serio-comic opera, "Serse": Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg gives a heartfelt, sympathetic performance as Arsamene, downtrodden brother of tyrannical King Serse (American mezzo-soprano Paula Rasmussen). Told by Serse that Romilda (Arsamene's true beloved, unknown to Serse) has accepted his offer to be his queen, and that he (Arsamene) can now marry "the woman he really loves", Atalanta (Romilda's scheming sister), the frustrated Arsamene responds to these surprising developments with this aria of anger and frustration - "I want her, and I shall have her!". Watch and hear a remarkable rendition of this aria by Hallenberg. With Christophe Rousset directing Les Talens Lyriques. From the Dresden Musikfestspiele 2000. "Crude furie" (Paula Rasmussen, "Serse")

From Handel's serio-comic opera, "Serse": American mezzo-soprano Paula Rasmussen is wonderfully fiery here as the volatile, plane tree-loving ("Ombra mai fu"-singing) Persian tyrant. Here, the King releases his- rage on learning that Romilda, the woman whom he desires and expects to become his queen, has already married her true love, Arsamene (Serse's brother), with the help of General Ariodate (Italian bass Marcello Lippi) through a misunderstanding by Ariodate. Watch out for the explosive middle! Recitative and aria. "Crude furie degl'orridi abissi aspergetemi d'atro veleno Crolli il mondo, e 'l sole s'eclissi a quest'ira che spira il mio seno!" -- "You savage Furies from the hideous abysses inspire me with your venom! Let the world turn to ash and the sun be eclipsed by my anger, till my heart bursts with fury!" With Christophe Rousset directing Les Talens Lyriques. From Dresden Musikfestspiele, 2000. "Io le diro"/"Tu le dirai" (Rasmussen, Hallenberg, "Serse")

From Handel's serio-comic opera, "Serse": American mezzo-soprano Paula Rasmussen as King Serse sings "Io le diro che l'amo" (I'll tell her that I love her [myself]) followed by Arsamene (Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg) singing "Tu le dirai che l'ami" (You'll tell her that you love her). Arsamene is Serse's put-upon brother, Arsamene. Serse has ordered Arsamene to inform Romilda of Serse's plans to wed her, but Arsamene balks, because unknown to Serse, Arsamene is actually Romilda's true love. The King can not be disappointed or displeased, however. Serse then tells Arsamene he'll just have to tell Romilda himself ("Io le diro"). When Serse leaves, Arsamene expresses his certainty that Romilda will reject Serse's offer to her to be his queen ("Tu le dirai"). Recitative and arias.
