Silent Suffering :: September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month

http://www.sicklecellart.com/ Silent Suffering :: Nazaire :: Sickle Cell Awareness Art Sickle Cell Series by Artist / Painter Nazaire who also has Sickle Cell Anemia. This video is a moment of SILENCE for our loved ones who have come before us in this struggle. Health Education :: :: What Is Sickle Cell Anemia? Sickle cell anemia is a serious condition in which the red blood cells can become sickle-shaped (that is, shaped like a "C"). Normal red blood cells are smooth and round like a doughnut without a hole. They move easily through blood vessels to carry oxygen to all parts of the body. Sickle-shaped cells don't move easily through blood. They're stiff and sticky and tend to form clumps and get stuck in blood vessels. The clumps of sickle cells block blood flow in the blood vessels that lead to the limbs and organs. Blocked blood vessels can cause pain, serious infections, and organ damage. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited, lifelong condition. People who have sickle cell anemia are born with it. They inherit two copies of the sickle cell gene, one from each parent. People who inherit a sickle cell gene from one parent and a normal gene from the other parent have a condition called sickle cell trait. Sickle cell trait is different from sickle cell anemia. People with sickle cell trait don't have the condition, but they have one of the genes that cause the condition. Like people with sickle cell anemia, people with sickle cell trait can pass the gene on when they have children. :: What is Anemia? Anemia (uh-NEE-me-uh) is a condition in which a person's blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells, or the red blood cells don't have enough hemoglobin (HEE-muh-glow-bin). Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color and carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Red blood cells are made in the spongy marrow inside the large bones of the body. Bone marrow constantly makes new red blood cells to replace old ones. Normal red blood cells last about 120 days in the bloodstream and then die. Their main role is to carry oxygen, but they also remove carbon dioxide (a waste product) from cells and carry it to the lungs to be exhaled. In sickle cell anemia, a lower-than-normal number of red blood cells occurs because sickle cells don't last very long. Sickle cells die faster than normal red blood cells, usually after only about 10 to 20 days. The bone marrow can't make new red blood cells fast enough to replace the dying ones. The result is anemia. Source :: NHLBI - NIH http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/Sca/SCA_WhatIs.html Be sure to ask your doctor for more info Please take Note: Do not use the word Sickler. Stay Positive, don't allow ignorance to keep you down at an even lower level than your pain has kept you for so long. To overcome major difficulties you must be empowered do so. Words like Sickler does not define who you are... Demand that they change the language and allow you, your dignity... For in spite of your pain you are a human being worthy of esteem and respect due to any other. My body is not free of these chains and cycles of Pain but I can fight to free my mind. Sickle Cell Anemia -- Hope from Gene Therapy

This inherited red blood cell disorder is the most common genetic disease in America, and one of the most painful and debilitating. Until now, bone marrow and cord blood transplants have been the only treatment available to patients, and matched donors are hard to find. But an experiment at Genetix in Cambridge, Massachusetts is raising hopes. By treating the bone marrow of mice with anti-sickling gene therapy, scientists saw great improvement in normal red blood production. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, "minds-on" experience. Sickle Cell Disease Causes Much More Pain Than Thought

Internal Medicine Report: A new prospective study of pain in adults with sickle cell disease finds that daily pain is far more prevalent and severe than previous large studies have indicated. Authors of the study gave diaries to 232 sickle cell disease patients to record daily pain and indicate whether they used hospital emergency or unscheduled ambulatory care for their pain. Previous estimates about sickle cell pain assumed that if patients didn't go to the hospital or seek medical care for pain, they didn't have pain. Previous sickle cell treatments also were based on the number of visits to hospitals to relieve pain.

Evolution of sickle cell malaria

http://www.myspace.com/acorvettes A gene known as HbS was the center of a medical and evolutionary detective story that began in the middle 1940s in Africa. Doctors noticed that patients who had sickle cell anemia, a serious hereditary blood disease, were more likely to survive malaria, a disease which kills some 1.2 million people every year. What was puzzling was why sickle cell anemia was so prevalent in some African populations. How could a "bad" gene -- the mutation that causes the sometimes lethal sickle cell disease -- also be beneficial? On the other hand, if it didn't provide some survival advantage, why had the sickle gene persisted in such a high frequency in the populations that had it?

N.K.O.T.B Reunion, Canned Cheese Burger, Pickle Sickle

Welcome, one and all to the greatest video blog of all time. This is Barely News. I'm Kurt LaBelle. I hope you're hungry because we have some mighty morsels of useless information and tastless trivia for your viewing pleasure. ## It worked for The Spice Girls, Led Zeppelin and Van Halen. Now, the biggest boy band of the '80s, New Kids on the Block, will be getting back together for a major tour, according to People magazine. That's right, ladies. Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, and those two other guys that nobody cared about - will be performing their classic hits "Hangin' Tough," "Popsicle" and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind." So dig out your N.K.O.T.B. lunchbox, buttons, posters and board games, and find out when the boys are visiting your town. And then, you should really get some professional help. ## They say the secret to a good cheeseburger is its freshness. Hot off the grill, with crisp vegetables if you like. Maybe a pickle. Maybe. It's not the kind of food you'd think to put in a can. The graphics on this German site make it clear this product is intended to pack for outdoor sports such as canoeing, but I can't help but feel you should go with something you'd expect to eat out of a can. Maybe soup. ## Now I would like to tell you about the Pickle Sickle. No ladies.. get your mind out of the gutter. It's a frozen treat from Texas. You'd think the guy who first sold these at a roller-skating rink would think twice about putting the word "sick" in the name of his product. Still! Their mascot Pickle Sickle Bob tells us about the health benefits of pickles - apparently they soften blood-sugar spikes after high-carb meals. ## And that's not the news. I'm Kurt LaBelle. We'll see you tomorrow for more tasty treats and sick trivia on Barely News.

Sickle Cell PSA :: Face the Future :: PSA 3

Sickle Cell Disease PSA I took part in. Nazaire http://www.sicklecellart.com/ In these PSAs you will find models and actors, but these PSAs are special - some of the people featured do suffer from the pain of Sickle Cell Disease, as I do... unfortunately so does the very cute little guy at the end of this clip. Please support your local Sickle Cell Org. A little guy like that should never know this pain again. Help us end this painful disease, share this PSA with a friend. Lumina Films did a great job on these My thanks also to Lang/Durham DVR version recoded off Cable Television - this is a PSA a non-commercial advertisement. I took part in this to help raise awareness about a very important issue facing my community. This Ad is selling nothing the whole point of it is awareness. Stop the silly politics and red tape and allow it to be shared! Remember the community you serve Connecticut! Remember the reason for this PSA. OUR PAIN! OUR FACES! OUR VOICES! - nazaire
