Southwest Airlines commercial circa 1972
Ahhhh, nostalgia. They don't make them like this anymore - commercials or "flight attendants". One has to wonder how many takes they had to do until they got the timing right - this was, of course, before CGI ruined everything. |

Southwest Airlines' Colleen Barrett on 'Servant Leadership'
Most of the U.S. airline industry is under assault from skyrocketing fuel prices and a sluggish economy, but the message that Southwest Airlines president Colleen Barrett brought to the recent Wharton Leadership Conference was about the importance of treating employees and customers well. Innovative leaders such as Southwest chairman Herb Kelleher and smart management of non-human resources -- especially Southwest's fuel purchasing hedges that have saved the company more than $2 billion -- have certainly helped the airline post profits for 35 consecutive years. But the foundation for all that, she said, has been making the satisfaction of employees and customers the highest priority. |

Southwest Airlines Engine Washing
Southwest Airlines Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to use an environmentally friendly engine-washing system in an effort to save on fuel and cut carbon emissions. The Dallas-based carrier is using the EcoPower system offered by East Hartford, Conn.-based flight technology firm Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Pratt & Whitney said Southwest's annual fuel-cost savings could exceed $20 million. The airline also stands to cut 135 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually as a result. The arrangement with Pratt & Whitney comes as Southwest, along with the rest of the airline industry, faces record-high fuel prices that have led many to trim capacity and levy fees on travelers. Southwest in the first quarter reported a 63 percent drop in profit to $34 million, partially driven by a 34 percent hike in fuel and oil costs compared with the same period of 2007. Southwest said it is performing regular washes at airports in Orlando, Fla., and Oakland, Calif., where Pratt & Whitney has established new service centers. The EcoPower equipment uses a closed-loop system with atomized water to wash aircraft engines, avoiding contaminant runoff, Pratt & Whitney said. The patented system is considered more effective and faster than traditional engine-washing processes. Pratt & Whitney parent United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) employs more than 225,000 worldwide and in 2007 recorded $4.22 billion in profit on $54.8 billion in revenue. |

Southwest Airlines Employee Celebration for Colleen Barrett
SOUTHWEST AIRLINES EMPLOYEES SHOW THEIR LUV FOR PRESIDENT COLLEEN BARRETT WITH A SONG, GIFT, VIDEO TRIBUTE, AND THE SOUND OF COWBELLS The Most Influential Woman in Aviation Steps Back from Management Role —Company Throws a Good Old Fashioned Surprise Party! DALLAS -- July 15, 2008 - The clamoring of cowbells and a rendition of a Willie Nelson song is not what you would expect to hear in the lobby of a Fortune 500 company; but then again, Southwest Airlines is famous for doing the unexpected! Southwest Executive Colleen Barrett, who leaves her role as President effective today, was honored by Employees in Dallas with a surprise tribute to show appreciation for her years of Servant Leadership. (Colleen will remain a fulltime Southwest Employee through July 2013.) The monumental event was centered on hundreds of Southwest Employees cheering for a woman the Company LUV built affectionately calls its "Queen of Hearts." "Well, we all know that Colleen doesn't like surprises! But, we also know that Colleen can't be totally surprised that her Southwest Family wanted to make this day a little extra special for her," said Southwest CEO Gary Kelly. "The transition from an extremely hardworking President to an extremely hardworking Southwest Employee is a huge milestone. From the 34,000 Southwest Family Members -- job well done, Colleen Barrett -- we'll see you tomorrow!" As Colleen's Southwest Family gathered at Corporate Headquarters to mark her last official day as President, the Employees celebrated the milestone exactly the way Colleen's mother would have wanted -- with the ringing of cowbells. The ringing of cowbells is a tradition that dates back to Colleen's childhood in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Her mother used to ring "that darn cowbell," as Colleen would say, every time she or her brothers would accomplish a significant goal or celebrate a colossal moment in their lives. In fact, the distinctive sound of "that darn cowbell" marked many historic milestones for Colleen, and today was no exception. About Colleen Barrett: Prior to joining Southwest (in 1978), Colleen Barrett worked for several years as an Executive Assistant to Herb Kelleher (Southwest's Founder and former Executive Chairman) at his law firm. For Southwest Airlines, she has served as Secretary of the Corporation since March 1978; and served as Vice President Administration from 1986 to 1990; Executive Vice President Customers from 1990 to 2001; and President from 2001 to present. Colleen has been named one of the "World's 100 Most Powerful Women," by Forbes.com (2005, 2004); one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business," by Fortune (2003, 2002); and one of the "100 Most Influential Women in Aviation," by Women in Aviation International (WAI) (2003); in addition, Colleen has been presented the Horatio Alger Award (2005); Texas Trailblazer Award (2005); Tony Jannus Award (2007); IWF Woman Who Makes A Difference Award (2004); and she was inducted into the International Pioneer Hall of Fame as a Woman in Aviation, (2005). www.southwest.com Media Please Contact: Public Relations at 214/792-4847 |

Southwest Airlines Unveils Illinois One
SOUTHWEST AIRLINES UNVEILS ILLINOIS ONE Airline Honors the State of Illinois and City of Chicago with Specialty Aircraft CHICAGO -- April 14, 2008- Southwest Airlines today honored the State of Illinois with the unveiling of Illinois One, a Boeing 737 emblazoned with an artist's rendering of the state flag. Southwest Airlines' top leadership celebrated the high-flying tribute to the State of Illinois at an event in a Chicago Midway hangar with Mayor Richard M. Daley and local Employees. "We are thrilled to honor Illinois with this beautiful aircraft; it is truly a testament to the great relationship we have developed with our Chicago Midway Customers and a tribute to our local hard-working Employees," said Southwest Airlines Chairman Herb Kelleher. "Our pride for Illinois will now fly high over the 64 cities Southwest serves." Since beginning service in Illinois at Chicago Midway in 1985, Southwest Airlines has grown from eight to 227 daily nonstop departures. As Southwest Airlines has increased its flights, it also has increased its need for space. In 2004, with the help of Mayor Daley's outstanding Leadership, Southwest Airlines participated in the Terminal Development Project at Chicago Midway. The expansion has allowed Southwest Airlines to meet and exceed a promise of growth and has created an ideal environment for offering the Legendary Southwest-brand of Customer Service for Chicago travelers. "Southwest's success at Chicago Midway would not have been possible without the sum of many parts, and this beautiful aircraft is a result of our collective hard work," said Gary Kelly, Southwest's Chief Executive Officer. "We have a great partnership with the State of Illinois and the city of Chicago. Together we have all given our Illinois Customers a high-quality travel experience and low fares." More than 500 Southwest Airlines Employees and community leaders celebrated the unveiling today at one of the airline's hangars. Attendees waved Illinois flags, took photos with a bald eagle, and were the first to see Illinois One up close and personal. Illinois One joins twelve other 737s in Southwest's fleet that carry a unique paint scheme: Arizona One, California One, Lone Star One (Texas), Nevada One, New Mexico One, three Shamu aircraft (Sea World), Silver One (celebrating Southwest's 25th anniversary), Triple Crown One (recognizing Southwest's top rankings for ontime performance, baggage handling, and Customer satisfaction), Maryland One, and Slam Dunk One (tribute to our NBA partnership). The newest aircraft in the Southwest Airlines fleet is truly a work of labor and art, requiring 26 people working three shifts over the course of six days to paint. Over 93 gallons of paint and 10 different colors make up Illinois One. Chicago Midway Airport is Southwest's second largest operation in terms of daily departures with 227 daily nonstop flights to 47 cities. Southwest Airlines, the nation's largest carrier in terms of domestic passengers enplaned, currently serves 64 airports in 32 states. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates nearly 3,400 flights a day and has 34,000+ Employees systemwide. |

Dr. Phil - Southwest Too Pritty To Fly Girls. Part 1
How would you feel if an airline banned you for how you looked? According to two young women, they were banned for life from flying Southwest Airlines. Sarah Williams and Nisreen Swedberg made national news when they were escorted off a plane. They say the airline had a problem with them for being "young and decent-looking" while their flight attendants were "middle-aged." Southwest denies treating the women unfairly because of their appearance and says the women used vulgar language, obscene gestures and aggressive behavior. Joining the conversation is Kyla Ebbert, who says she was once told by Southwest that her outfit was too skimpy, and two other passengers who say the airline booted them because they were women. |
