Swayambunath Stupa, Kathmandu

The sleepy, all-seeing Buddha's eyes that stare out from the top of this hemispherical shrine have become the quintessential symbol of Nepal. Perched atop a forested hill on the western edge of the Kathmandu Valley, Swayambunath Stupa is Kathmandu's most important Buddhist shrine. Swayambunath is also known as the Monkey Temple, and as you start up the hill, you will likely begin to see the monkeys that lend the stupa this alternate name.

Boudhanath Stupa Boudha Nepal

This is a fantastic Buddhist Stupa at a place known as Boudha, about seven kilometers east of Kathmandu. The largest spherical stupa is held in great veneration both by Lamas of Nepal and Tibetans and also by Nepali Hindus. You will see the people walking, worshipping, praying and offering around the stupa. You also get a view inside the big Buddha-temples there. On the background you hear the well-known mantra Omi mani padme hum. It's there everywhere.

Dhamekh Stupa, Sarnath

Dhamekh stupa, Sarnath, outside Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (India). This stupa, reportedly built in the time of Emperor Ashoka, marks the place the Buddha preached his first sermon in the Sarnath Deer Park. There are still deer, but they're behind a fence. This stupa is the most impressive of what was a vast monastery/temple complex before Muslim (Turkish, I think) invaders destroyed it. It was re-discovered by the British and has undergone some restoration since the 1800s. This video was taken during a visit by the Dalai Lama to the area.

Becske Enlightenment Stupa Inauguration SEP/14/2008

Buddhist Stupas symbolize the perfect harmony of the universe. They are not just a building of cement and bricks; but also an emanation of the joy because we may be able to benefit all beings by developing compassion and wisdom. Their live power pervade and pacify people and the land. They generate peace and love which are mentioned by every religion as the most important values. According to the tradition Stupas bring good fortune, fulfill the wishes of people with good intentions, protect their environment. With their appearance in the world, several locations have become honoured and a travel destination of spritually open people. The building of the Becske Stupa and the inauguration ceremony was conducted by Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche. For the building of a Stupa, an experienced Buddhist master is essential in every case. In Asia a number of Stupas have been built with the support of Rinpoche, in Europe the Becske Enlightenment Stupa is the first one.. A buddhista sztúpa a világegyetem tökéletes harmóniáját szimbolizálja. Megjelenésével a világban, sok hely vált a térség büszkeségévé, a szellemileg nyitott emberek zarándokhelyévé. (A rinpocse szó tiszteletteljes tibeti cím, jelentése "értékes, drága".) A rinpocsét a karma kagyü vonal előző vezetője, a 16. Karmapa avatta szerzetessé, több nepáli elvonulási központnak és kolostornak ő a vezetője. Évente több alkalommal világi gyakorlók ezreit vezeti be különböző gyakorlatokba a Kathmanduban lévő egyik nagy sztúpa, a Szvajambunasz szomszédságában lévő kolostorában.

SWAYAMBHUNATH circumambulate the Swayambhunath Stupa 13 times on a holy day, it is equivalent to circumabulating Mount Kailash once and the merit accumulated is over 10,000 times. Legend: Kathmandu Valley was once a great lake. And long before the Buddha Shakyamuni appeared in Lumbini his predecessor of the Age of Truth (Satya Yuga), the first of seven appearing Buddhas, the Buddha Vipashyin , arrived in Nepal and meditate upon the hill which rose from the western shore of the lake. He offered the mountain to the people as a place to worship. The Buddha Vipashyin scattered a lotus seed into the lake. And as this lotus unfolded its petals, an illumination light radiated from the center of its thousand petals, which illuminated the entire valley mandala. This light was named the Swayambhunath Dharmadhatu, the Self-Sprung Infinite Field of Light and the flame of the enlightened mind of the primal Buddha, Vajradhara burned at its center. The light of Vajradhara also emanated in the colors of the rainbow and in each of the five colors appeared one of the Five Buddhas - Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha and Amoghasiddhi.
