TAI FU From July to September each year, Japan lives in fear of Tai Fu - or typhoons - that are renowned for taking lives and devastating coastlines. When the typhoons hit, everyone from the hi-tech cities to sleepy fishing towns stop and brace themselves for the hellish onslaught. Last month, in a continuation of his quest to traverse the globe in search of new and challenging waves, Australia's veteran big-wave adventurer, Ross Clarke-Jones set out to harness that energy and surf a typhoon in Japan. Ross was joined by local Japanese tow-surfer Shimpei Horiguchi and a crew of some of the most experienced big-wave surfers on the planet including Tom Carroll, Brazilian Carlos Burle, Hawaiians Ian Walsh and Jun Jo and fellow Aussie Beau Emerton.

This is a video I did for the song (originally it was a chant) "Witchi-Tai-To" by Jim Pepper. "Witchi-Tai-To" is a true American Indian style song, and is based on a Peyote chant, the singer, Jim Pepper, had learned from his grandfather. It was a huge hit by Everything Is Everything, which he was the lead singer for (on this occasion) and sax player for, and the song was covered by many recording artists such as Harpers Bizarre, and Brewer and Shipley! What I wonder is... Is Jim Pepper the inspiration for "Sgt. Pepper" whose band was made famous by The Beatles? He was playing in New York at the time and released 5 records in the year 1967, which was the year "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was released, and there is the psychedelic connection. Could The Beatles have been aware of him? Just a thought! Whatever the case, the song is something wonderful. I hope you agree.
