My question is-religion is about Love and Compassion. Where is the love and compassion about sacrificing chickens?? A very expensive venture too-wouldn't the money be better used to help the poor and needy instead of sacrificing chickens??? I would think that would be a better expression toward one's reverance toward God than sacrificing (which also involves animal cruelty) chickens. Brooklyn alone, more than 50,000 chickens are trucked in for kapporos ceremonies, in which chickens are roughly waved over people's heads and then slaughtered. The chickens languish without food and water and are stacked in cramped, filthy transport crates on public streets for hours. Many don't even survive until slaughter. Many Jewish communities use money for kapporos instead of live chickens?the money is then donated to tzedakah (charity). I was shocked to see, in PETA's footage, that inhumane conditions and cruel treatment of chickens have been found at the kapporos operation of Rabbi Shea Hecht in Brooklyn, New York. This mistreatment of animals is a flagrant violation of the Jewish principle tsa'ar ba'alei chayim (causing animals unnecessary suffering). It's religiously acceptable to use money in place of chickens, but Rabbi Hecht chooses not to. Please watch the video, then write to Rabbi Hecht to ask that he stop using chickens for this ritual.
