This clip demonstrates the effects of the Coriolis and Centrifugal forces, by viewing various scenes from both rotating and stationary cameras. The first example shows a cannon fixed to a rotating disc. The cannonballs fly in straight lines since once shot no force acts on them. When this scene is viewed from the disc's frame of reference (i.e., as would be seen by a viewer that stands on the disc) the cannonballs seem to fly in a curved path. This demonstrates that in a rotating frame of reference one must take into account the Coriolis and Centrifugal forces. In the pendulum, the string exerts a force whose vertical component balances gravity and the horizontal component (shown in the clip) causes the harmonic motion (approximately). The disc and the pendulum has the same period, meaning both complete a cycle at the same time. When viewed from the disc's frame of reference the centrifugal and Coriolis forces appear yet again. This time the centrifugal force balances the string's horizontal component. This is because the centrifugal force is also proportional to the distance from the center but pushing outward instead of inward. The equal periods make the factor of proportion the same for both. This leaves the Coriolis force alone to act on the ball. Since it is always perpendicular to the object's path, this creates a perfectly circular path. Finally, we decrease the pendulum's period to be 2/3 of the disc's period. Now the centrifugal force no longer balances that of the string and the motion becomes more complicated. The process starts when DNA is wrapped around special protein molecules called histones. The combined loop of DNA and protein is called a nuclei zone. Next the nuclei zones are packed into a thread. The end result is fiber known as chromatin. This fiber is looped and coiled yet again leading to the familiar shapes known as chromosomes which can be seen in the nucleus of dividing cells. Chromosomes are not always present - they form around the time cells divide when the two copies of the cell's DNA need to be separated. Using computer animation based on molecular research we are now able to see how DNA is actually copied in living cells. An assembly line of amazing biochemical machines are pulling apart the DNA double helix and cranking out a copy of each strand. PALIN: Mmmmm -- [lip smack] -- Well -- Let's see. There's -- [deep breath] [sigh] -- Of course, in -- in the great history of America, there have been rulings, that um -- There's never going to be absolute consensus by every American, and -- Um -- There are those issues -- again, like Roe v. Wade where I believe are best [pause] held on a state level and addressed there. So -- Um, you know, going through the history of -- America, there -- there would be others. Palin appears to not be able to think of any other Supreme Court Cases off the top of her head, but instead of explicitly saying so provides an answer by streaming together a number of talking point generalities. When listening to the clip, it's fairly evident to me that this is what is happening from a qualitative perspective. But I'm politically biased against her, and it could be just my interpretation. And so I wanted to see if there were any more conclusive quantitative patterns that would emerge from the process of visualizing her speech patterns by overlaying the audio waveform with a typographic animation of the transcript. There was a fair amount of subjectivity in how to annotate and punctuate the transcript. And by being as literal as possible in the transcription, I observed a fair amount of false starts, stumbling around words, and jumping from various threads of thought in a non-linear pattern. This behavior actually happens with a lot of people, and isn't necessarily conclusive of anything. And so then the question becomes what are the quantitative indicators of a political "non-answer" or talking point line of BS? To me the most predictive factor was the number of abnormally "awkward" spaces that she had between her words. It's like she's you can tell that she's not struggling to not think of a specific word, but it's more of a prolonged pattern that she'll use for buying extra time for creating her long-range strategy of how she's going to fill up time with an acceptable non-answer. That's still pretty quantitative, and so I'm curious to hear any thoughts on this and whether there any other ways of detecting and quantifying BS.
