Waterfowl Migration

Ducks and geese that travel through Missouri in fall are coming from their nesting areas in the upper Midwest and southern Canada. When ponds and lakes in the north start to freeze and food becomes scarce, these waterfowl move southward to warmer climates. For most, the Midwest is only a stopover for resting and refueling with food. But some do spend all winter in the Midwest. Others travel further south, only to visit again in spring on their way back to northern nesting areas. http://mdc.mo.gov

From Santa Cruz to Samaipata, Comarapa, Siberia, Cochabamba, Oruro, Sajama, Sorata, Titicaca, ending in La Paz. The tour can be done the other way around, but bear in mind that going slowly up from the lowlands to the highlands is better in order to avoid possible high altitude sickness. You can adapt this trip to a more relaxed pace, adding to the program one or tree days in the most interesting places of this itinerary. ...Day 8: we'll visit the Machía Park, where besides a "back to wildlife" project for captive parrots and toucans as well as mammals like monkeys and big cats, you may watch Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Blue-headed Parrot, Dusky-headed Parakeet... Day 9: On road to Oruro we may spot Ornate Tinamou, Condor, Puna Hawk, Wedge-tailed Hillstar, Giant Hummingbird, Sparkling Violet-ear, Black-winged Ground-Dove, Andean Flicker, Rufous-banded Miner, Rock Earthcreeper, Tawny Spinetail, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Streak-throated Bush-Tyrant, Spot-billed Ground-Tyrant, Short-billed Pipit, Band-tailed Seedeater... Day 10: We'll enter the Nat. Park using the road to Sajama town until Tomarapi, probably finding Lesser Rheas, Andean, Ornate and Puna Tinamous; Diademed plover, Brown-capped Tit-spinetail, D´Orbigny´s Chat-tyrant, Rufous-webbed Bush-Tyrant... Day 11: Birding at a sunrise that illuminates the immense snowy volcanoes: the beautiful and conical Sajama (6.550 mts, the highest pick of Bolivia) and the neighboring Pomerata and Parinacota (6.300 mts). We'll spend the day looking for the numerous and diverse fauna of this park: Vicuñas, Pumas, Andean Cat, Andean Fox, Vizcachas, Tuco-tuco Rodents, Hairy Andean Armadillo and the many birds in Huayña Khota Lagoon and on the hillsides of the volcanoes... Day 12: Something to say about breakfast: the low atmospheric pressure does not help to get the scolding coffee of your dreams and needs there, because it boils at only 80°C, so if you want to warm up,.. go to boil an egg in the geysers. We go searching for the best preserved and more colorful chullpas of Bolivia. At the end from the day we'll reach the hot springs of Urmiri... continues...

Duck Banding - Delta Waterfowl

Few things get more high fives, pictures and stories amongst waterfowl hunters than taking a banded bird. Duck hunters everywhere fondly remember their first band or a unique story of a band they collected, but few hunters get the opportunity to see how banding is done. Join members of Deltas Minot Chapter and youngsters from the area on site at the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge as they learn firsthand about how birds are banded. The pros from the USFWS explain the banding program and the importance of banding data for managing North American waterfowl. Enjoy this inside look at the USFWS banding efforts!

Finished Lab Waterfowl Hunting

My dad's labs were trained like this. It is amazing what they can do. Although he didn't have time to train his own dogs this well he always bought his labs "finished". I remember growing up and my friends always asking me about my family's lab and how they felt he was a robot. Since I was born my dad owned a black lab (up until 2005). He has since retired and is now considering getting yet another lab but this time since he has time, wants to train the lab himself. Since he is too old to hunt waterfowl now a days (so he says) it will be a pet dog. This footage is pretty cool to watch even though I'm a pointer guy.

Women's Hunt 2008 - Delta Waterfowl

Its hard to explain in words the amount excitement and energy that 15 new women hunters can exert in a weekend, especially after shooting their first duck! Its not a quick smile and move on type of moment, its an all out holler, high five, and a big hug type of moment! September 13th and 14th weekend kicked off Delta Waterfowls 2nd Annual Womens hunt. We can confidently say that it was just as big of a hit as last years! This two-day event encompasses all aspects of hunting, from gun safety and shooting practice, decoy and calling demonstrations, landowner respect and retriever demonstrations, to harvesting a bird and enjoying a waterfowl feast for dinner! This hunt paints a pretty clear picture that women are well suited for waterfowling, and are enthusiastic about getting involved. Lots of fun, lots of friends, a huge waterfowl feast, and amazing mentors to coach you through the experience...theres no better recipe to introduce any new women hunter to waterfowling!
