Today the Wensleydale Railway is a community-run heritage line with big ideas. It's the only part of the UK's mainline network which is 'vertically integrated' and its operators eventually hope to add another 18 miles of track, reconnecting it with the Settle & Carlisle line. This video - edited from a half-hour programme - looks at the Wensleydale's impact on the local community as well as hearing from two firemen who worked the route during its heyday.

Shot over the course of 9 months (to encapsulate the changing seasons) this promotional video is used both in the Wensleydale visitors centre at the creamery in Hawes, at international food festivals and by the firm's marketing staff. The sedate pace of Dales life is reflected in the relaxed voice-over (by TV and movie star Richard Ridings), the selection of long scenic shots and use of pastoral and brass band music. August 22nd/23rd were spent in Wensleydale. Thanks to special permission from the line manager I was able to go where most cameras don't reach. My pass was scrutinised many times to ensure that safety was foremost. Standard 4 80105 was on loan from Bo'Ness and I recognised the crew from their previous visits with 'Thomas'. An exciting couple of days in familiar countryside. I have some video I took in the eighties of Barry Scrapyard and I must look up the shot of 80105 languishing there.

CPAS Wensleydale Camp 1. Animation workshops were a big hit and here is some of the work produced over the week. I apologise for the overuse of the funky music by Hot Butter!

TRIP TO RIBBLEHEAD On 22nd July 2007 the Wensleydale Railway ran a special train with five DMU cars, headed by a class '101' to Redmire. Here, the party were met by a bus, which took them to Ribblehead Station for a guided walk across the famous Ribblehead Viaduct, which was unused that weekend because of engineering works. This is the happy party of mostly 'mature' people who had arrived from all parts of the country. The old chap through the window told me a tale or two of the old days! This bit of video was taken with my new digital camera which uses a hard-drive and needs no tapes. Sounds like a good thing? We'll see all in good time. August 22nd/23rd I spent a couple of days chasing the Bo'Ness & Kinneil Standard 4MT 80105 up and down Wensleydale. This was my last shot before leaving. The train was delayed and departure was several minutes (15?) after 19:30, Had it been on time the bridge would have been bathed in the evening sunshine. Sadly the sun had disappeared behind the fells when the train returned from Castle Hills, facing the correct way. The camera was adjusted to give an image but not as good as daylight!
