Kyuss - Whitewater (live in the desert - full)
This is the full "Whitewater" song, live from one of the Kyuss generator parties in the desert. Rare footage. I have more but this is probably the best (the wind gets the light blown away... imagine these guys playing in the dark in the middle of Calif. desert...) The people who were listening to Kyuss at that time (let alone see them in such an amazing setting) are nothing compared to the sheer volume of people who listen to "fashionable" Josh Homme's Queens Of The Stone Age nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I truly adore them, it's just that they keep getting more and more mainstream, especially after Oliveri was kicked off. That Kyuss era was unique and, according to Josh, "if you weren't there, well... you weren't". So here is a small invaluable piece of rock 'n' roll history along with the lucky few who witnessed it, and to all QOTSA fans, please remember where it all started! ...actually, that's something that Josh also needs reminding right now... :-( ... |

White-water rafting on blow-up dolls
It's not an official sport event and it will probably never be considered for the Olympics, but the growing popularity of Rubber Doll White-Water rafting in Russia saw the fourth annual contest staged near St.Petersburg. The event, better known as the 'Bubble Baba Challenge', is the highlight of the novelty watersports season in Russia, and was held over a testing one kilometre course near St.Petersburg. Contestants are required to brave rapids on the river Vuoksa while embracing a blow-up doll, some of whom had their modesty preserved by t-shirts. The idea to use rubber dolls to race down the rapids was conceived as a joke three years ago during a long rafting trip involving only men. Since then the popularity of this new watersport has grown rapidly. www.itnsource.com Reuters 14348/06 |

Introduction to Whitewater Jet Boat Racing...
A breif explanation of the sport: Eagle is the number one race hull but there are others racing. Kwikraft is a New Zealand hull designed and built by Tony Ward, 19 to 21 foot tunnel. There also is at least one Doug Riddle hull still racing and there are several unique one-offs, the two built by River Wild are good examples. One is a 21 foot B-class tunnel and the other is an 18 foot FX class tunnel. Bottoms are anywhere from .160 to 3/16ths. Sometimes AR plating is used as an extra layer of protection. Sides are generally .090, decks can be even less than that. Saving weight is very important and the location of the weight in the boat is even more important. Most use spoons, an add on piece in front of the intake. Hulls are generally tunnels although v-hulls have done well in FX class, and River Wild has built two super light "semi-wing in ground effect" hulls that are also quite good. The FX version did especially good in 2001. I believe the Eagle 19 foot Sport step-tech will become a big force in FX class in the next few years. Since these boats are raced through whitewater interspersed with rocks and logs, they need to have fairly precise handling characteristics compared to other types of race boats. They also need to be very predictable. Bad habits and quirks can put you up in the rocks or worse. The pumps are obvously highly modified, but based on Berkeley, Legend, Aggressor or American Turbine production pumps. Stainless impellers are almost universal. Full rock grates, although again highly modified, are also universal. On the higher powered boats much attention is applied to supplying the thrust bearing with lots of clean lube. Various methods are used for this including pumps and pressure lube systems. Fabricated steel nozzles are used almost exclusively, and various combinations of wedges. The nozzle replaces the entire piece from the bowl back. It's probably obvious, but maybe it needs stating, the black art of this racing is the pumps and the hulls. The engines are pretty straight forward. They have to make good horsepower and torque at less than about 6500 rpm, but they have to be able to do this fully loaded down at full throttle for up to 30 minutes. They have to be able to do this reliably at least twice a day (sometimes more) and for two days in a row. That's the minimum requirement to finish and you know the saying, "to finish first, first you have to finish". Rumour has it, and it's only rumour that I've heard, that some of the unlimited engines are over 650 cubic inches! Engines and pumps are set way back, most of the pump hangs out the back of the boat. Fuel tanks sizes range from 25 to 35 gallons for an FX boat to 60 to 100 gallons for an Unlimited boat. Usually they are set up as saddle tanks, at the very back of the hull. Most boats have run rollbars in the past and it is now a requirement. Most are made out of aluminum and have double or triple hoops with back braces. Perhaps we may see a move towards chrome moly construction as the anchoring and hoop requirements begin to make them a good tradeoff weightwise. Five point harnesses with lever locks are also a requirement, not to mention a good idea. Race type lifejackets from Lifeline and Security are also used as are fire suits. All boats carry first aid kits, fire extinguishers, two ropes, paddles, tools, some minor spares and a red flag. |

Red Bull UpStream 2008 - White water wakeboarding!
Wakeboarders "slided" white water UpStream! More than 1,500 spectators lined along the Sava river in Tacen / Slovenia today to witness the birth of a new sports discipline. After most of them clashed with whitewater during yesterday's training, today the 12 most courageous European wakeboarders competed against each other on the kayak route in Tacen at the very first wakeboard contest on whitewater called Red Bull Upstream. Let us remind you again this was a world premiere! Injuries were, of course, unavoidable, but not too painful. Already yesterday, the best Slovene rider Robert Pokovec injured his shoulder but today he set his teeth, gulped a couple of tablets, and appeared at the starting line. This morning, after sliding nicely over one of the artificial objects in the water, the Belgian Quentin Delefortrie managed to plough even more nicely in the concrete wall, and thus brought some blood into the otherwise crystal-clear river. But humans were not the only ones to suffer Pokovec proved once again that his name suits him perfectly (pokovec = naughty boy) when his wakeboard literally cut off one of the cameras' lens. Even this accident had a happy ending as the cameraman swears the last shot was the best shot ever! The lens, though, needs a new leg. But let's return to the competition. During the qualifications, each contestant had three runs, whereas for the final result only the best two were regarded. The jury gave points for the Choice of Line, Tricks, Style and Aggressiveness&Creativity. The lucky 6 who showed the most, and thus made it to the Finals were Nico Lerchenfeld, Norbert Vasko, Dominik Gührs, Robert Pokovec, Balász Bakró and Emilio Epstein. In the Finals they had two runs on whitewater, and they certainly did not hold back it was a really fierce fight. The spectators witnessed everything, from wild sliding across rocky or concrete obstacles to creative use of all kinds of objects that the organizers placed in the riverbed especially for this purpose. One of the most interesting ones was undoubtedly the high arch across one of the islands, in the free-sports terminology known as a rainbow. At the end, the decision was according to the judges very difficult, but the spectators approved the final results with a big applause. Nico Lerchenfeld (GER) slid himself the first place, followed by the Hungarian Balász Bakró and the German Dominik Gührs. The Slovene rider Robert Pokovec had a bit of bad luck due to the camera accident but was at the end more than pleased with his fourth place, also because he helped prepare the whole contest and today the new chapter of the sports history was written indeed. This is something completely new, we wakeboarded like that for the first time. I was present at the preparation process right from the beginning and helped design these objects. The wakeboarders had to pay full attention to the water, its rapids. They had to think about lots of things, explained Robi after the results. And I'm really sorry for the camera an unexpected wave surprised me. I do hope we'll repeat this next year. And if we do, I'd like to see bigger obstacles to make it even more exciting. The champ Nico Lerchenfeld was extremely satisfied with the result: I really hope the event will be repeated next year. Count me in! Awesome organization, awesome people, and niiice girls! Final standings: 1 Nico Lerchenfeld (GER) 2 Balász Bakró (HUN) 3 Dominik Gührs (GER) 4 Robert Pokovec (SLO) 5 Emilio Epstein (GER) 6 Norbert Vasko (HUN) 7 Quentin Delefortrie (BEL) 8 Sebastian Stare (GER) 9 Lovro Klepac (CRO) 10 Vukašin Čupić (SRB) 11 Marco Gradl (GER) 12 Jan Kralj (SLO) |
