作詞は秋元康、作曲は見岳章による。オリジナルの編曲は竜崎孝路によって行われた。元はアルバムの中の一曲で、シングルカットは他の曲の予定だったが、レコーディングしたひばり本人の希望でこちらに変更された。歌の内容から、まるで遺作となることがわかっていたかのような楽曲としてもしばしば語られる。美空ひばりが歌った数々の名曲の中でも、幅広い年代層に親しまれてきた作品である。 1989年1月11日に日本コロムビアより発売され、シングル盤は150万枚以上を売り上げた[要出典]。この後にシングルが一枚出ているが、実質遺曲といえる曲であり、また美空の最大のヒット曲となった。 2000年3月21日には「川の流れのように 2000」として久石譲によりアレンジされたものが発売された（声は原曲と同じである）。ちなみにこの作品にはオリジナルバージョンも収録されている。 美空ひばりは1989年6月24日、平成元年が始まった直後に52歳で死去した。同年末の第31回日本レコード大賞では、この作品に「金賞」と「作曲賞」が授与されるとともに、故人となった美空ひばりにも「特別栄誉歌手賞」が授与された。長年にわたる彼女の偉大な業績を称えて、この年から日本レコード大賞に「美空ひばりメモリアル選奨」も新設された。また、作詞者の秋元康もこの曲によってさらに評価を高めた。曲先で作られたが、秋元が事前にイメージを作曲者の見岳に伝えている（そのためか、秋元の友人である石橋貴明などから『昴』のパクリと揶揄されることもある）。 なお、この曲の『川』とはニューヨークのイーストリバーのことである。 また同曲（フルコーラス）を、生前のひばり本人が歌唱する貴重な映像を持つテレビ局は、TBSテレビ（正月特番「春一番！熱唱美空ひばり～いま誓い新たに燃える不死鳥全25曲～」1989年(昭和64年)1月4日放送）、フジテレビ（「ミュージックフェア」1989年(平成元年)1月15日放送）、テレビ東京（「演歌の花道」1989年1月15日放送）の3局のみである。

Yoni Tabac is originally from Israel, where he received a fine arts bachelor's degree in acting, along with focuses in lighting design and technical direction. He toured professionally with the Israeli Repertory Theater, while also working as a technician and rigger for the University Theater in Haifa. During those years, he was working with several production houses to bring the classics and new work to the rugged terrain of Israel. Since 2002 he has lived in Los Angeles, after he finished his military duty, where he is working on different projects. He was recently seen in Polanski.
