this is peter hudson's first 3d stroboscopic life sized zoetrope sisyphish. participants must crank the pedals to bring the magical effect of people swimming, but going nowhere. a modern metaphor for the illusion of progress.

A new addition to the Animation Pavilion inside Disney's California Adventure, the Toy Story (II) Zoetrope illustrates how animation works, but on a grand scale. This features a series of spinning discs, each with a different 3-D animation (parachuting army men, Jessie spinning a rope, Buzz walking on a ball, Woody riding Bullseye, Wheezy and and LGM jumping on a see-saw, and an LGM waving. Be aware that the animation effect occurs because the spinning of the wheels is timed with a strobe light.

Peter Hudson's third pedal powered 3d zoetrope, Homouroboros, is an allegorical take on human evolution and our current plight of too much energy consumption. The piece relies on pedal-powered cooperation augmented at daytime by solar panels, and early optical physics to convey its droll message and achieve its unique effect.

The Toy Story Zoetrope is located inside the Animation Building at Disney's California Adventure. When still, it looks something like a carousel with rows of figures of Toy Story characters in various poses. When it starts spinning the strobe light action begins, which gives the impression that the figures are performing an animated sequence - Jessie spins a rope, Woody rides a bucking Bullseye, Buzz walks on a big ball, a little green man waves, and so on.

This is a modern replica of a Victorian Zoetrope, found at the Guildhall museum, Rochester, Kent, UK. The machine was originally invented by William Horner in 1834. This one is coin operated, and costs 10p to run. The device worked by spinning very quickly, and the user looking through the holes in the side, which acted as frame dividers, for the short animation drawn inside. The result was a short fliker film, much like you see here.

In March 2007 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London we hosted an evening of animation related events which I took as an opportunity to make some more examples of my Phonographantasmascope, an extension of the Zoetrope principle. It is all live action and works by using the shutter speed of the camera rather than the rather irritating stroboscope methods other 3D Zoetropes use. The models spin once per second (too fast for our eyes to comprehend). Then the lights dim and the strobe lighting flashes 18 times per second.
