In 1948-50 the Conemaugh River Dam caused many river towns to be removed. The road to Cokeville and bridge were removed, as well as this railroad spur to the Mainline that runs through Blairsville. here is a nice look at three vintages of the Pennsylvania Railroad, taken from the base of the Conemaugh Dam in Blairsville/tunnelton PA. You can see the original 1864 canal bridge alignment in the background, the beautiful stone arch bridges of 1907 and the current 1947 CSX line still in use. US 22 Federal Highway was built starting in 1918. After World War 2 it was necessary to start bypassing smaller towns due to increase in cars and suburbia. The new 3 and 4 lane sections were begun as early as 1948 bypassing Murrysville Export and Delmont, and in 1953 Blairsville was bypassed. 60 years later the rest of the road is finally being completed into a 4 line interstate type highway.
