Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé (3)
Recorded in 1981 by Philippe Lefebvre, now one of the 3 titulaires @ Notre Dame of Paris. This Toccata from Maurice Duruflé's Suite, Opus 5, is fiendishly difficult to play (obviously). And if it's not played crisply & precisely, with great attention to tempo & registration, it can turn into a mish-mash very quickly. Lefebvre nails it. The instrument, installed in 1971 (after numerous semi-successful efforts to renovate an organ built initially in 1349 (that's right, 1349 -- FIVE HUNDRED ... |

Solemn World of Lights: Chartres Cathedral
Chartres Cathedral is located southwest of Paris. The building has four wings pointing directly North, South, East and West. Each wing represents the passage of time, from the past to the future. The front façade is located on the west wing. The west is where the sun sets and represents the apocalypse: The Last Judgment. The combination of light and stained glass portrays the apocalypse as described in the bible. The north wing represents times past. There are images of the Virgin Mary and ... |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Tournemire
Fantaisie-Improvisation on "Ave Maris Stella", recorded in 1981 by Philippe Lefebvre. Please excuse the ticks & pops. You youngsters probably don't know what a plague these little nicks were to LP-owners back in the day. But it was almost impossible to keep our black vinyl records in pristine condition. We tried to handle them as delicately as possible, but these little imperfections invariably appeared. By cracky, you whippersnappers don't know how good you have it ;-) |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé (1)
Recorded by Philippe Lefebvre (the titulaire @ Chartres at the time) in 1981. Since 1985, he's been one of the 3 organists @ Notre Dame of Paris. Maurice Duruflé was not very prolific, but every piece he published was an exquisitely polished gem. The Suite has 3 parts -- uploaded separately. Chartres cathedral is one of the great (& most intensively studied) buildings in the world. There's been an organ there since 1349, but this instrument dates back only to 1971 -- a IV/67/98 Danion ... |

Orson Welles in F for Fake, Chartres
Welles' moving monologue on authorship and Chartres, in his final completed feature-length work, his 1976 experimental essay 'F for Fake'. With the authorship of Chartres remaining unknown, it would seem to belong to us all. |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé "Fugue on ALAIN"
Maurice Duruflé's musical tribute to Jehan Alain, a French musician & composer who died in 1940, at the age of 29, in the Battle of Saumur. The battle was one of the last, if not the last, major actions before the Germans entered Paris. Philippe Lefebvre plays the IV/67/96 instrument installed in the cathedral in 1971. The recording was made in 1981, 4 years before M.Lefebvre became one of the 3 titulaires at Notre Dame de Paris. |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Tournemire "Victimae Paschali"
Philippe Lefebvre, one of the 3 titulaires @ Notre Dame de Paris since 1985, recorded this in 1981, when he was titulaire at Chartres. My notes say they were recorded in August. Bet it was a little toasty up there in that swallow's-nest organ loft. "Victimae" is the third of the Big Three Duruflé transcriptions of Tournemire's masterfully inventive improvisations (along with "Te Deum" & "Ave Maris.") Only a tiny portion of Tournemire's inventions was ever recorded. It's a shame he didn't ... |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé (2)
The 2nd part of Maurice Duruflé's exquisite 3-part Suite, Opus 5, recorded in 1981 by Philppe Lefebvre. The Chartres instrument is one of a handful of "Swallow's Nest" organs. Cologne Cathedral has one; Strasbourg & Freiburg are 2 others I can think of. Again, thanks to Martin Doering of Die Orgelseite for some of the pictures. |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé "Veni Creator"
Maurice Duruflé's "Prelude, Adagio & Choral Varié" on the Latin hymn tune "Veni Creator" is 18+ minutes of musical magic. It's also too long for YouTube. So I've broken it down into its 3 components. Here's the Prélude. Philippe Lefebvre performs in a 1981 recording. I previously (wrongly) attributed this to Tournemire. Sorry for the screw-up. |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé "Veni Creator" (2)
Elegant & sparklingly inventive. The second section of Maurice Duruflé's "Prélude, Adagio, & Choral Varié" on the ancient Latin hymn "Veni Creator." Performed superbly (as usual) by Philippe Lefebvre in a 1981 recording. Thanks again to Martin Doering & Die Orgelseite for some of the pix. I inadvertently attributed this, when I initially uploaded it, to Tournemire. I've got to start paying closer attention ;-) |

Pipe Organ Chartres Cathedral Duruflé "Veni Creator" (3)
The final portion of Maurice Duruflé's "Prelude, Adagio & Choral Varié" on the Latin hymn "Veni Creator". Philippe Lefebvre performs on the instrument installed in 1971, in a recording made 10 years after the installation. |
