August 2008 In the isolated mountains of Ecuador, a community of four-feet tall dwarves appear to be immune from cancer and diabetes. Here, two scientists are on a mission to find the ultimate cure for cancer. Inbreeding among the small and remote Ecuadorian communities has led to a high percentage of Laron Dwarves. One third of the world's 300 Laron population live in the southern Loja province. "My parents are normal, my grandparents were normal. I have seven siblings, four of them are normal height and three of us are little," says one Laron sufferer. Dr Marco Guevaras and his brother Jaime believe the secret behind the dwarves' apparent immunity lies in the absence of a hormone called "insulin-like growth factor 1 or IGF1". Yet the scientists need to move fast in their research; an expensive treatment has already been discovered to alleviate the symptoms of the syndrome in children.

La Selección de Futbol de Ecuador venció hoy por 1-0 en Quito a una deslucida Chile, resultado que le permitió escalar al sexto puesto de las Eliminatorias Sudamericanas del Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010. En un partido correspondiente a la novena jornada de la serie de clasificación y que terminó con tres expulsados, el cañonero Christian Benítez (Santos Laguna de México) anotó el tanto ecuatoriano a los 70 minutos, después de una serie de ocasiones perdidas. La primera posibilidad de gol para el equipo de Ecuador, dirigido por Sixto Vizuete, la desperdició a los 5 minutos Felipe Caicedo, pues su disparo, de media vuelta, salió junto al vertical derecho. Una salida a gran velocidad de Joffre Guerrón (Getafe de España) por el costado derecho, obligó al defensor chileno Ismael Fuentes a cometer una falta que el árbitro del partido, el uruguayo Martín Vázquez, sancionó con tarjeta roja, por lo que Chile actuó con un hombre menos desde el minuto 19. Ecuador volvió a desperdiciar el gol tras un disparo de Benítez, que pasó junto al vertical derecho, después de una gran jugada de Caicedo, al minuto 25. La expulsión de Fuentes y luego el cambio de Matías Fernández, para que ingresara el defensa Pablo Contreras, redujo las acciones ofensivas de Chile, conjunto dirigido por el argentino Marcelo Bielsa, mientras que Ecuador incrementó las llegadas al arco de Claudio Bravo, pero sin precisión en el disparo final. Ecuador también se quedó con un hombre menos, desde los 75 minutos, por la expulsión de Antonio Valencia. El chileno Gonzalo Jara recibió la tarjeta roja, a los 82 minutos, tras agredir al ecuatoriano Patricio Urrutia.
