From the 1986 USHRA Event at Veterens Stadium in Philadelphia, PA, this is Mike Nichol in Excaliber taking on Diehl Wilson in the Virginia Giant. Although Excaliber won this race, he was eventually disqualified for blocking the track while stalled out with transmission problems. This is one of the earliest monster truck events to be shown on ESPN, as monster truck racing had only been around for a little over a year at this point. From the 1987 USHRA event in Buffalo, NY, this is Dave Marquart in Excaliber taking on Don Maples in Samson in a first round race. These two truck were very different, and illustrated a change that was beginning to take place in Monster Trucks. Excaliber wore standard 66" tires and featured an amazing (for that time) 12" of suspension travel, making it an ideal racing truck. Samson was purely a show truck, with much heavier 73" tires and almost no suspension travel....
