Dive Across America-Bonne Terre Mine, MO
When the worlds largest lead mine in Bonne Terre, MO closed down in 1963 after nearly one-hundred years of operation, the miners were understandably pissed. They left their tools and walked out. But because of poor visibility, my first dive is a murky potential death trap of submerged tree branches and fishing line --the second dive, a flight of imagination. |

Dive Across America-Bottomless Lakes, NM
I'm driving cross country from my home in Los Angeles to Cambridge for a journalism fellowship at Harvard. Since I love diving, I decided I try to dive all the sinkholes, quarries and lakes I could get to along the way. Thought I'd share them with you for a different view of the USA. Here's my first: a sinkhole just 12 miles south of Roswell, New Mexico -- despite a silty gypsum bottom, this spring fed "lake" has a lot to see--including a bold, little green sunfish--ready to take me on for ... |
