Ryan Shay (Notre Dame / Central Lake, Michigan) won the USATF championships in both the marathon and the half-marathon in 2003, his first year as a professional runner. Michigan Runner TV spoke with the 9-time NCAA All-American in March 2004, shortly after the US Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon.

The New York Road Runners hosted the Men's Marathon in New York City, November 3, 2007. Ryan Hall, Dathan Ritzenhein and Brian Sell, the top 3 in a field of 134, were named to the American team. Festivities turned somber with the news that Michigan native Ryan Shay collapsed and died at the 5.5 mile mark.

Vic Wertz was a great Detroit Tiger, and also hit the ball that made Willie Mays famous. Then playing for the Indians, Wertz hit one into dead center field and Willie went and got it with one of the most celebrated catches ever. Vic Wertz came back to Detroit after his Indian days and owned and operated a successful beer distributorship.
