I took this video of the inland hurricane that hit southern Illinois while I was at work in Marion.

What the hell was it? Although there were funnel cloud's spotted in the sky's...they did not touch down...therefore Not a Tornado! The National Weather Service is calling it ..A Inland Hurricane!! Here is just a (small taste) of the damage that Southern Illinois suffered from...There are over 66000 people in the area without power. Utility pole's were snapped like toothpick's! After the inland hurricane hit, we walked around the area of the shopping center we work in and noticed that dollar general was hit hard.

Video inside the Carbondale, IL Best Buy during the inland hurricane on 5-8-09. Taken on my cell phone so the video quality is poor. The storm hit around 1:30pm with winds clocking in at 106 mph. It was considered to be an inland hurricane due to the structure of the storm which included an eye.

We went driving around Marion a day after the storm and saw some things that looked just as though a hurricane came through. Well even though it was a 90mph wind storm that came through, the storm looked like a hurricane on radar images. When I first saw the destruction after school I thought a tornado had came through but realized it couldn't have been a tornado since the damage was everywhere in Marion, and surrounding areas. Carbondale had a wind gust of 106mph!!!...

Carbondale, IL gets hit by a 20 minute 40 mile wide inland hurricane which had an average wind speed of 85 mph with gusts at ground level of 106 mph and 124 at treetop level. This is right after the tree fell on the car while we were in it. This is now being called a derecho (spanish for straight) due to the fact that nobody has hurricane insurance so the Governor came and emphasized that it was a derecho NOT a hurricane.

Recently Southern Illinois counties Jackson, Williamson, and Franklin was deamed a disaster area after some severe weather. National Weather Service called it a "inland hurricane". I work as an EMT and was at work during the storm. As soon as the weather died down my partner and I whent out on our first of many calls. We leave the station and head west down DeYoung St or Rt 13 through Marion. Amazed at the destruction we soon end up on scene to a semi that stopped on the shoulder of the road ...

This is part 4 of our tour of the damage of Marion. This time we go through some residential areas through Marion, such as Westernaire, and then we turn on Main Street (Old Route 13) and go down there seeing other signs damaged by the wind storm or inland hurricane.

This video is towards the end of the storm. I had left my camera in the car thinking the storm was tracking to the north of Herrin. Unfortunately it was heading dead on at us. This video is taked from the open bay door at Buck Millers in Herrin. I was "supposed" to get my car worked on, but my plans got seriously changed!!
