After landing at the Xigera airstip, we boarded a mokoro (traditional canoe) for a two hour transfer to the camp.

One of the best parts of visitng Mokoro Trails Camp was the willingness of the camp staff to teach us about Botswanan culture and traditions. One afternoon Chris, Chiyo, and Chaplain showed us the traditional way of making fire by rubbing a stick into a block of wood to send a spark into nearby wad of tinder (elephant dung and dead grass). Then the men in our group gave it a try.

This shows a typical scene as our guides took us through the channels in the Okovango Delta. I filmed this from my seat at the front of the mokoro (a dug out canoe) I shared with Kaitlin, It shows the guides using long poles to push the other mokoros along.

We took rides in traditional African Mokoro Canoes through the Okavango Delta. There are passages through the reeds created by foraging Hippos that the locals call "Hippo Highways." Hippos are extremely dangerous and often will attack a Mokoro if you go out at the wrong time of day/year. Last year the Mokoro that a honeymoon couple was riding in was attacked, and the woman was killed when she didn't follow the guides instruction to jump into the water to escape the attacked Mokoro....
