Travis Orbin - "Numbers" Interpretation

My official statement regarding leaving Periphery and joining Sky Eats Airplane may be read here: blogs.myspace.com This video clip solidified my position in SEA. Some of the parts may be played a bit closer to the recorded version (out of respect for the album) but that will leave room for some stick twirls and random showmanship! Be sure to peep the rad piece of hair peeking out of my isolation headphones, haha. Here are the actual notes that I sent to the guys: Honestly, some parts could ...

Travis Orbin - Sky Eats Airplane Playalong

I'm really digging SEA's S/T album. One night I decided to torture myself by transcribing/'Orbinating'/working out the most physically demanding tune on the record. You may notice me counting and staring at my sheet music, since I learned everything--literally--the previous night. The pink shirt is a Screaming Headless Torsos cutoff. Be jealous! :) The audio was mixed by my buddy Taylor Larson of Oceanic Recording. myspace.com/travisorbin

Travis Orbin - "Photographic Memory" Interpretation

If I had to select a tune that summed up the S/T album it just might be this one. From the tasteful tinges of electronica to crushingly heavy / mechanical passages it runs the gamut; it's also quite dynamic and hook-laden. Anyway, here are some notes and the usual transcription: 0:15 - 0:21 - hi-hat splashes match electronica melody 0:32 - crash mute compliments vocals 0:36 - brief 8th note displacement 0:51 - 0:52 - hi-hat locks in with electronica 1:46 - 1:49 - brief 8th note displacement ...

Travis Orbin - Jay-Z Playalong

This tune is from the excellent "In My Lifetime, Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life" record, and it features Amil-lion and Big Jaz. The track was produced by Timbaland. It features a choppy and syncopated groove, proving quite the challenge to play along with. I was feeling particularly inspired by this one night (despite achieving only two hours of sleep), and just let the camera roll. What you see is what you get, clams and all. I improvised throughout the entire song, excluding when Big Jaz spits ...

Travis Orbin - Some Select Periphery Drum Set Parts

This video clip documents a few select parts from my previous progressive / metal outfit Periphery. The first two examples are from the tune "Insomnia" (the intro and 1:05-1:21, respectively). The third and fourth examples are from "Juggernaut: Icarus Lives!" (the first chorus and the big 32nd note triplet lick into the outro, respectively). Finally, the fifth and sixth examples are from "The Walk" (2:45-3:39). I would have played that particular section all of the way through but the memory ...

Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "Juggernaut: Icarus Lives!"

This tune marked Casey's second recorded performance with the band; what an amazing voice! I opted to play the intro riff without 'chicking' 8ths on the pedal hi-hat for more power. It's all BRUTALLY difficult to play, heh. Do you guys/gals prefer this angle or the TFO angle? Next up is "Though"! Full drum set transcription: s26.photobucket.com Tempo = 110 BPM Disclaimer: In an attempt to stave off potential ignorant comments as I've received in the past, I felt the need for this nigh ...

Travis Orbin - Cyclamen Session (Part Two)

www.myspace.com Next up is "Djent! Djent!" and I managed to get a solid take in completion. It was tough slamming those 16th note rimshots down at the tune's tempo. There's an intriguing pattern occurring around 0:58 that is comprised of a stack cymbal and high-pitched crash being played in a pattern in 3-8 (each), but within different parts of the bar(s). At the end, Taylor automated the room mics so they'd increase in the mix; this is something similar to what Hayato had programmed. Full ...

Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "The Fast Ones"

Thus begins the long and arduous process of documenting all of my 'Orbinated' Periphery drum parts. By the way, the Periphery guys dubbed that term; I still say it, although I feel a tad silly in doing so, hah. This is one of the first tunes that I ever modified and it features a sensational performance by the band's first vocalist, Jake Veredika. "The Fast Ones" is now defunct and will never be released for various reasons. After not rehearsing this tune for the better part of two years I ...

Travis Orbin - New "Insomnia" Ideas

This video clip documents some new 'Orbinated' parts for the Periphery tune "Insomnia" (www.myspace.com ). The execution isn't as accurate as I'd like it to be, but it's getting there! If the song isn't posted on the MySpace head on over to www.soundclick.com to take an audial gander. Anyway, the first half is a fill-in that begins around 2:15 and launches back into the main riff. I demonstrate this at half tempo (73 BPM) and performance tempo (146 BPM). The second half is the big outro riff ...

Travis Orbin - TRX Cymbals Demo

I would venture to call this a 'time' solo, since I play with it often. There isn't much 'layered' stuff happening (ostinatos, etc.). It's alright, I just wanted to get something up for TRX since I've been telling them I'd have a promo clip prepared for the last month or so! Thanks again to Arin Ilejay and TRX Cymbals! Travis Orbin - "Long Walks On Short Bridges" Interpretation

This tune kicks off the S/T album (other than the brief intro) and it's very intense and energetic. The drum part is highly taxing and puzzling to play with or without my 'interpretation.' There are many touches of odd time but you may not immediately notice because of the fast tempo. There's also a lengthy metric modulation towards the middle that purports a 'six' feel. I was going to use my good ol' 14" brass snare but as I was changing heads, one of the lugs snapped right in half! Crap ...

Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "Friends And Family"

This merry little ditty brings back memories of long drives to Columbia, MD for band practice, after-rehearsal dinners at Pizza Hut and other early Periphery recollections. It features Jake Veredika on vocals, whom also originally penned the tune. This is not my 'tightest'/most consistent performance by any means, but take a gander at some of the expressions that cross my face, haha. This is TOUGH STUFF! As with "The Fast Ones", this is one of the earliest Periph tunes that I worked on, thus ...

Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "Though"

"Though" was a brief instrumental that was to precede "Insomnia." It has since been dropped from the album track list so I don't know what will become of it. When I was in Periphery we always rehearsed this at 120 BPM for various reasons. It was pretty grueling to get it up to the actual performance tempo (130BPM). My programmed drums are not present in this track so you may hear the odd snare and such here and there. I decided to utilize my 'power piccolo' snare for a change. Notes: 0:02 ...

Travis Orbin - Drum Solo #1

This is a cold, technical drum set solo. I am cognizant of the audio/video synchronization complication, but such was not the case with the original file. I hope it does not detract from the performance. Anyway, at the urging of some new band mates I took a few days off from my weekly practice schedule and composed and arranged it. The solo is played to a metronome at 95BPM and 'close-mic'ed.' I decided to close-mic it to hear just how precise (or UNprecise {eek, working on that!}) the notes ...

Travis Orbin - Pop/Rock Groove

I did a session for a pop/rock project--with a heavy electronic/loop influence--back in October '08 at Paul Leavitt's studio (All Time Low, Gwen Stacy, Mercy Mercedes, etc). I utilized this groove in one of the tunes. Recently, one of my students refreshed my memory of it and I decided that it would be rad to document it. I demonstrate it slow, at performance tempo, and ridiculously fast for giggles. I apologize for the bit of sloppiness but I haven't rehearsed this stuff since September ...

Travis Orbin - "Nookie" Session

Since SEA's headlining tour is jokingly dubbed 'The New Nu-Metal Tour,' we decided to do a rendition of Limp Bizkit's "Nookie". This video showcases some highlights from the drum tracking session. I tracked the drums in my buddy Taylor's new studio. The first segment is the chorus. I stuck pretty close to what John Otto performed on the album. The audio doesn't sync at the end because we tracked the loop separately for a supremely mechanical feel. Next is the prechorus ("like a chump, 'eyyy ...

Travis Orbin - "Alias" Interpretation

"Alias" closes the album and is every bit as strong as the opening tune and the subsequent ones. This will be my last video for a few weeks as I am waiting on new recording gear and--hopefully--my new Truth kit may also be completed. Notes: 0:13 - 0:17 - fill-in modified 1:37 - 1:39 - cymbal orchestration changed 2:43 - 2:45 - extra bass drums added (the sequence is one quarter, two eighths, three eighth-note triplets and four sixteenths) 3:00 - hi-hat strikes compliment vocals 3:01 - 3:25 ...

Travis Orbin - Screaming Headless Torsos Playalong

This tune is called "Blue In Green (The Vampire's Song)" and it's from the album loosely known as '1995.' The vocal melody is based on Miles Davis's trumpet solo from the same tune on his 'Kind Of Blue' record. Screaming Headless Torsos are one of my favorite bands. Their 'sound' is an eclectic amalgam of many various styles of music. The guitarist, David 'Fuze' Fiuczynski, is incredible and unique; everything from his tone to his voicing. He is a profound artist, progressing with time and ...

Travis Orbin - "Cookies & Scarves"

This brief tune is a nod towards Mr. Zappa and--inadvertently--early video game music, haha. The title is derived from the period in which it was composed. I was working at a biopharmaceutical company and most of my free time was devoted to doodling with Guitar Pro. There were many free gifts/treats dispensed to the employees such as cookies... and scarves. Anyway, the tune is available for purchase via my SnoCap player on my MySpace music page. Check out the drum set transcription! s26 ...

Travis Orbin - On The Virg Playalong (RE-UPLOAD)

As long as I'm re-uploading clips I may as well do this one, as I was never completely content with how it turned out. My apologies for the THIRD upload, haha. When I finish a video it's like a small accomplishment; I become really excited and wish to post it immediately. This is certainly no exception as it's one of the hardest things, drum-wise, I've EVER done. Anyway, I brought up the backing track yet again, increased the overall volume of the clip, improved the video quality and ...

Travis Orbin - Tracking At Audio Hammer Studios

This video was removed from the Periphery account, so I decided to post it under my personal one. Thanks to Jake Bowen (who also filmed it)! In the first half I am improvising some linear/quasi-linear figures--sans click, if memory serves me correct--in an effort to stay warmed up. As for the second half, I was tracking a tune called "Far Out" at 132BPM. The click that is present in the video is not what I had in my cans; I like to track/rehearse most material with the subdivision that is ...

Travis Orbin - Cyclamen Session (Part Three)

www.myspace.com Finally, there's "Forgotten Sky." This one is groovy, sexy, and dark and mysterious all at once. The choruses and bridge are beautiful and the whole piece is pulled off with much conviction. Featured in the video is a short bit from the intro (the drums are faded in with some effects present), the first verse leading into the first chorus, the end of the second verse leading into the second chorus (I had to do a small punch-in here), most of the second chorus, the bridge, and ...

Travis Orbin - "Pixieprog" Session

"Pixieprog" is a tune that I wrote a few years ago for the drum set and bass guitar. My friend Taylor and I are fleshing it out and re-recording it. This video documents the short drum intro, two A sections, the fill-in leading into the C section, first quarter of the C section and the last B section with the crazy fill-ins. Special thanks goes to Alex Rudinger for loaning me his bass drum for the session! I plan on selling "Pixieprog" via SnoCap on my MySpace music page. It will be my first ...

Travis Orbin - "Disconnected" Interpretation

First take, yay! This video documents my parts for "Disconnected," by my band Sky Eats Airplane. Currently, it is my favorite tune to perform. My first tour with them was terrific; an amazing, nigh surreal experience. Life can be funny sometimes... one week you're woodshedding and the next week you're improvising in seven in front of thousands of people. Here are some notes: 1:01 - changed fill-ins 1:02 - 1:03 - broken '5' pattern on crash/chinese, instead of only accenting the '5' 1:03 - 1 ...
