On a fine clear March day of 2006, we catch WATCO's Alabama Southern Railroad south bound train running over CSXT's Alabama Minerals Subdivision as Z776 from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa. Power is a former SP SD40 upgraded to dash two specs. Also a former CP SD40-2 and a former UP SD40-2 that has been rebuilt into a SD38-2. The 645 series prime movers work hard to lift the train through the Alabama foot hills.

The Union Railroad services the remnants of the steel industry in the Mon Valley with a small fleet of MP15 and SW1500 locomotives. Here, a scrap train arrives in Duquesne Yard as a cut of empty B&LE hoppers are switched. Later, a trio of blue switchers deliver an empty steel slab train to the US Steel Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock. The Union is one of the few railroads to use cabooses in regular service, due to the large number of backing maneuvers performed. The cabooses are ex-B&LE cabins....
