Andre Watts, "Revolutionary" Etude

Andre Watts from a Mr. Rogers episode in the 1980s playing Chopin's "Revolutionary" Etude, Op.10#12. This is one of the best performances of this etude I've heard, and to see the fluidity of Watts' left hand leaves me speechless.

Revolutionary TV - Afghanistan

Aug 2005 One controversial TV show is doing what's never before been done in Afghanistan -- discussing taboo subjects like paedophilia. A heady mix of investigative journalism and entertainment has made Tolo TV a revolutionary force in today's Afghanistan. "Our country needs programmes like this," reasons host Masoud Keram. "It's about facilitating social change." While Tolo has won plaudits for its news coverage, it is music programmes presented by women that have been the most controversial. "It's deviating from morality, Afghan values, Islamic principles." laments Afghan's chief justice. "Other cultures are prevailing over us." The influence of Tolo TV ensures that alternative viewpoints are heard. As owner Saaf Mohseni states: "The presenters are breaking down barriers. They're changing this country more than anyone else."

Chopin Etude Op.10 no.12 "Revolutionary" (Pollini)

Étude Op.10, No.12 in C minor known as The Revolutionary Étude, is a solo piano work by Frédéric Chopin written about 1831. It is the 12th of his first set of etudes - "Douze Grandes Etudes" dedicated to "son ami Franz Liszt" (his friend Franz Liszt). The two sets of Études, Opus 10 and 25, are known collectively as the Chopin Études, although Chopin also contributed three other lesser known études. - History - The étude appeared around the same time as the November Uprising in 1831. Chopin was unable to have a strong participating role because of his poor health, and allegedly he poured his emotions on the matter into many pieces that he composed at that time - the Revolutionary Étude standing out as the most famous example. Upon conclusion of Poland's failed revolution against Russia, he cried "All this has caused me much pain. Who could have foreseen it!" Unlike études of prior periods (works designed to emphasize and develop particular aspects of musical technique, cf the much feared but essential School of Velocity, or the Five Finger Exercises by Hanon) the romantic études of composers such as Chopin and Liszt are fully developed musical concert pieces, but still continue to represent a goal of developing stronger techniques. - Technique - In the case of The Revolutionary Étude, the technique required in the opening bars is playing an extremely fast, long and loud descending harmonic minor scale mainly in the left hand. The length and the repetition of these rapid passages distinguishes The Revolutionary from other études. Although the greatest challenge lies with the relentless left hand semiquavers, the right hand is also challenged by the cross-rhythms which are used with increasing sophistication to handle the same theme in various successive parallel passages. The left hand technique involved in this piece involves evenly played semiquavers throughout. The structure is of the strophic coda form (A A'). The opening broken chords (diminished chord with an added passing note) and downward passages transition into the main appassionato melody. The octave melody's dotted rhythms and the continuous accompaniment creates tension. At the end of the A' section, the coda provides somewhat of a rest from that tension and then the work recalls the opening in a final descending sweep leading to the final closing chords, in C major. - Influences - The end of the Etude alludes to Beethoven's last piano sonata, written in the same key - a piece Chopin is known to have greatly admired (compare bars 77-81 in the Etude to bars 150-152 in the first movement of Beethoven's sonata). (Played by Maurizio Pollini)

Revolutionary Road (2008) Movie Footage Clip

http://www.CentralMovieNetwork.com/fdg.htm Revolutionary Road (film) Revolutionary Road is a 2008 American drama film directed by Sam Mendes. The screenplay by Justin Haythe is based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Richard Yates. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 26, 2008. Revolutionary Road Plot synopsis Set in 1955, the plot focuses on the hopes and aspirations of Frank and April Wheeler, self-assured Connecticut suburbanites who see themselves as very different from their neighbors in the Revolutionary Hill Estates. April is an aspiring actress who yearns to move to Paris, while Frank copes with toiling away at a corporate job he despises by drinking too heavily and engaging in an affair with a co-worker. The couple's marriage slowly dissolves into an endless cycle of bitter arguments and jealous recriminations. Revolutionary Road Production notes Director John Frankenheimer considered filming the Richard Yates novel soon after its publication, but opted to make The Manchurian Candidate instead. In 1967, producer Albert Ruddy bought the property for $15,500. Five years later, while a writer-in-residence at Wichita State University, Yates offered to adapt his work for the screen. Ruddy had other projects lined up at the time and demurred, eventually selling the rights to actor Patrick O'Neal. Yates read O'Neal's treatment of his novel and found it "godawful," but O'Neal refused the writer's repeated offers to buy back the rights. Yates died in 1992, O'Neal died two years later, and the project remained in limbo until David Thompson eventually purchased the rights for BBC Films. In March 2007, BBC Films established a partnership with DreamWorks, and the rights to the film's worldwide distribution were assigned to Paramount Pictures, owner of DreamWorks. On February 14, 2008, The Hollywood Reporter reported Paramount announced that Paramount Vantage was "taking over distribution duties on Revolutionary Road". The film was shot on location in Beacon Falls, Bethel, Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Redding, Shelton, Southport, Stamford, Thomaston and Trumbull (all in Connecticut), Westchester County, and various sites in New York City, including Grand Central Station, Tribeca, and Lower Manhattan. This film will mark the first time DiCaprio, Winslet, and Bates have worked together on a film since the 1997 blockbuster, Titanic, and the first time Winslet has worked with her husband Sam Mendes. This will also be the first time DiCaprio plays a father in one of his films.
