A bipartisan, bicameral resolution passed by the US Senate today provides an apology for the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans. The measure comes as the nation celebrates Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery. Aug. 20: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, vowed to make education a cornerstone of her candidacy for governor, which she announced at the high school she attended, LaMarque High, saying, "I want to help create an education system like I had." Countdown's Keith Olbermann points out that LaMarque High was segregated when she was a student.

This model represents Thomas Schelling's model of urban segregation. Schelling originally demonstrated the concept with coins on a chess board. We have transferred the ideas into Second Life and instead use coloured spheres inside a grid of houses. Schelling demonstrated how through mild tastes and preferences to locate in areas with similar people, large scale patterns of segregation could arise.
