It's a giant plughole! This is the east spillway shaft at Ladybower Reservoir in the Peak District. The top is around 25 metres across. Once the reservoir is full (6300000000 gallons of water) the excess water drains away through two of these enormous spillway shafts.

The outlet channel is a single circular concrete conduit, 22 ft. in diameter, located at the bottom of the west bluff. The control structure is located at the upstream end of the conduit and houses three gates, which have the capability of releasing a maximum outflow of 21000 cubic feet of water per second (cfs). Reconstructed dam easily handles 100 year rain, but erosion over spillway is spectacular. Wanted to tube it, but just too dangerous w/o helmets. This is one of many lake spillways that feed into Prince's Lakes' East Lake that had it's dam breached by this 100 year rain. F3 tornado went quarter mile south of lake 5 days earlier!
