Killer whales spy hopping

The killer whales would some times "spy-hop" which is where they look for food on the ice. Here is an awesome spy hopping video. I think the commentary gives a pretty good idea of what it was like to see this in real life.

Spyhop

Spyhopping is when orcas vertically propel themselves halfway out of the water and stay there for a moment, akin to a human treading water. They do this to sneak a peek at their surroundings above the surface - most commonly for food, but also just to see how close they are to shore. Killer Whales Spy Hopping

A pod of approximately 15 Orcas cavorts alongside an expedition ship bound for the Antarctic Peninsula. In this relatively brief clip one large animal surfaces to take a better look around in behavior known as Spy Hopping. I shot this video through the hole in the bow of the ship that allows sea water to drain off from the deck. I realized later that I was small enough to actually fall through the hole. Now THAT would have been a "killer" video!
