Awash National Park, Ethiopia

Awash National Park was established in 1966 in Awash city, Ethiopia covering an area of 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa with its southern boundary at the Awash River and also covers 756 square kilometers of acacia woodland and grassland.

It is house to several wildlife species such as wild pig, Oryx and Soemmerring’s gazelle. To the west of the plains of the park, animals that can be seen are cheetah, serval, fantale and leopard but they are not easy to spot. At higher slopes of the mountain Kilpspringer are found. It contains over 400 species of birds that range from birds of the riverine forest, Turaco, Coucal and birds of Savannah. To the north side of the park are the hot spring oasis that can be reached through the two scenic tracks from the main gate. There is an Awash River gorge lying at the south side of the park that consists of spectacular waterfalls. The main attracting feature of the park is the Fentale Volcano at its southern side. Another feature of the park is the turquoise blue pools situated at the extreme north side where waterbucks and Hamadryas can be spotted.
