Hobbit Hotel? Only in Waitomo, New Zealand!

The Hobbit Motel

From the land of Glow Worm Caves, Blackwater Rafting and subterranean caverns fit for dwarves in Waitomo, a region in Waikato, New Zealand, we are given the Hobbit Hotel. Located south of Auckland near Otorohanga, this is by far one of the world’s first “hobbit hole” and definitely one of the world’s most unique hotels. It was modeled after JRR Tolkien‘s depiction of the Shire in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the home of Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, Sam and the other hobbits in the series. It’s also right in Peter Jackson, producer of the Lord of the Rings movies’ homeland.

A typical room in the Hobbit MotelThe Hobbit Motel

Located in Woodlyn Park in Waitomo, an area famous for its caves, the Hobbit Motel was built along the park’s other whacky or rather, “uniquely eccentric” motel accommodations: the Train Carriage Motel, a railway car from the 1950’s; and Aeroplane Motel, an old airplane from the Vietnam War.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” – JRR Tolkien, The Hobbit.

The Hobbit Motel offers premium hobbit holes buried under one of New Zealand‘s hills. While they are faithful and true replicas of the hobbit dwellings described by JRR Tolkien, they are at least three times bigger than hobbit size to accommodate its regular human sized guests. They are complete with circular windows and doorways, walls that are coloured red and beige and camouflaged exteriors.

The motel offers two self-contained units which include kitchens, bathrooms and can accommodate up to 6 per unit. The cost for this incredibly unique experience is $170 per couple and extra guests are $12 each.

The rooms do not come with a hobbit, however.

What’s in Waitomo?

Glow Worm CaveWaitomo’s two biggest attractions – besides this little hobbit home under the hill – are its Glow Worm Caves and Black Water Rafting. These glow worms are native to New Zealand and radiate their light through many subterranean caves. Tours are conducted on boats through the caves where the glow worms light up the walls. Black Water Rafting takes place in the many under water cavernous rivers that also float through the glow worm caves.
