New Cathedral of Cuenca, Ecuador

The New Cathedral of Cuenca also referred to as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is located in Cuenca, Ecuador to the front of Parque Calderon. The idea of building a cathedral came from Juan Bautista Stiehle who was a German born Friar. The construction work started in 1885 and lasted around 90 years and hence, the Cathedral opened in 1975.

According to Dr Prem Jagyasi, the architecture of the building is a combination of various styles but Romanesque Revival being the dominant of all. The centre of the church is enclosed by three giant domes covered with white and blue glazed tiles that were brought from Czechoslovakia. Guillermo Larrazabal, a Spanish artist designed the stained glass windows of the cathedral. Its facade is made from local marble and alabaster and the floor is covered with pink marble that was brought from Italy. The towers of the cathedral are truncated as architects made calculation errors while designing them. In spite of this error, the monument has still become an important symbol of the city.
