The Fore! Play golf experience on Big Island Hawaii
We played The Mauna Lani South Course. With emerald green fairways are situated on open, black forms of lava with striking views of the blue Pacific, resulting in dramatic color contrasts. The 15th hole on the South Course may be one of the most photographed holes in Hawaii golf due to its tee-off from a rock pedestal topped with brilliant green grass driving across a stark black lava chasm where the beautiful waves of the ocean crash against the shore. We guarantee this shot will take your breath away!
The Mauna Lani North Course, has brown/black forms of pahoehoe (smooth) lava, emphasize rolling fairway and is a bit more challenging. Groves of twisted kiawe (mesquite) trees along the fairway edges. Water hazards come into play on nearly every hole, and several holes are contiguous with the ocean.
There are as many as five different tee positions on most of the holes to give golfers a wide range of options in meeting the challenging conditions.
The Mauna Kea Hapuna Golf Club. Sits on the hill above the landmark Mauna Kea Resort. The Mauna Kea Resort is scheduled to reopen in Nov. 2008. Hapuna North Course is challenging with magnificent views of the ocean from every hole. Bring along your a game of long and straight, otherwise, bring along a lot of balls! Tee times are available up to a year in advance. So, if you have a preference, book early, especially during the holiday and busy season.
Unwind and relax at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel’s “Spa without Walls”
You may choose to get your work out on one of the challenging golf courses or in the newly remodeled gym which features all new high end Technogym Treadmills, Elliptical Machines each with its own TV and full Natalis equipment and an array of yoga, pilates and water classes, which over look the magnificent ground and ocean views. You may opt to meander in to the “Spa without Walls.”
Upon arriving at the Spa, you will unwind outside in a shady grove in low-slung teak chairs and lounges or absorb the sunshine on a sunny plateau overlooking the cascading waterfalls. The treatment we recommend is a “Couples Massage” right on the waters edge. It is magical and memorable. The masseuses are highly trained and if you have any tension in your body, it is guaranteed to be gone after your treatment. The Spa was rated as one of the top 10 best spas in the world – and it’s no wonder!
At the end of your day, you’ll be off to your spacious suite for a wonderful night’s sleep or some “cuddle time” atop a Plush feather top mattress pad, a snuggly feather duvet and fluffy feather pillows. It is luscious to climb into bed and cuddle with the one you love!
