Travel ideas to escape the G20

Time is now to visit the U.S.: With the Canadian dollar so high, now is the time to travel to the U.S.  Head south of the border for a short road trip and to score some great deals on shopping – even iPads are cheaper there, starting at $499 USD vs. $549 CAD.

Remember, you’re allotted an allowance of only $50 duty free for 24 hours spent in the U.S. and $400 for 48 hours spent in the U.S. – so watch your spending or take the chance of getting taxed on any additional expenditures.

Shuttles to/from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport where Porter flies in and out of won’t be running during the G20 weekend, but you can easily catch a cab or take the TTC that can take you up to one block from the airport. Last-minute deals on hotels and activities (within 10 days of travel) can be found at www.tourismemonttremblant.com.

Go for a resort getaway.  Resorts Ontario offers great deals & last minute options for over 100 of the best resorts across Ontario, with maps that indicate distance + time from Toronto and lets you select what time of getaway: family, spa, romantic, culinary, and etc. With the G8 in the Huntsville & Muskoka regions from June 25-26, steer clear of nearby resorts.

Instead, try a road trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake where you can catch some of Canada’s best stage theatre at the Shaw Festival celebrating its 2010 summer season.  Visit www.resorts-ontario.com for more.

For food-lovers, the International Chicken & Rib Cook-Off will take place at the outdoor Sparks Street pedestrian mall (June 23-27) where teams from Canada and the U.S. to compete for a prize for the best ribs & chicken.  If you’re looking for a deal, you can get a 3rd night at 50% off when booking 2 nights at www.ottawatourism.ca.

If you’re looking for deals to Montreal, you can find packages starting at $125 for short LGBT, culinary, girls, and family getaways.  The Foodies Getaway package starts at $129 with accommodations, where you’ll go for a custom culinary tour through Old Montreal and visit restaurants like Chez L’Epicier, St-Viateur Bagel & Café for world-famous Montreal bagels, and of course, the famous Montreal smoked meat institution: Schwartz’s.  Go to www.tourisme-montreal.org for more.
