Jan 2008 UK Airport Strikes

Airport EmployeesTravel through the United Kingdom could be a bit rough in January 2008.

Workers of the British Airports Authority airport company have voted to strike over disputes on pensions. As one of the leading airport companies both domestically and internationally, BAA owns 7 airports in the UK, including: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Glasgow International, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Southampton.

If agreements are not made and concluded, then the strikes will be proceeding on the following days at the local times of the airports owned by BAA:

  • January 14, 2008 at 6am – January 15 at 6am (24 hours)
  • January 17, 2008 at 7am – January 19 at 6am (48 hours)

The first of the strikes was set for January 7th at 6am to January 9th at 6am, but was cancelled due to progress made during talks with the union. However, the strikes set for January 14-15 and 17-19 are still set to occur unless more agreements are made.

Don’t get stuck! If you are travelling in these upcoming weeks in, out, or transferring through any of these airports, please be sure to contact your airline to get more information. Consider changing the date of your flight or airport as soon as possible, and be aware that flights are likely to fill up because of many other passengers changing their flights!
