Myths about UK golfing getaways that need to be debunked

golfing getaways

It’s the home of golf, so it stands to reason that golfing getaways in the UK are a pretty big business. Whether it’s the UK based man venturing around the country, or a lady from abroad who is looking to sample what the UK has to offer, there are lots and lots of courses on offer.

In the midst of all of these courses are a few misconceptions though. This type of holiday in the UK can have certain stigmas attached, and today’s task is to debunk some of the main myths that arise from them.

Let’s now take a look at some of these misconceptions and highlight a few fictions.

Myth #1 – It’s all about links golf

This myth tends to arise because of one course, and one event. The Open Championship is held at St Andrews, which is in itself a links course. Immediately, this leads many to suggest that this is the only type of golf course that the UK has to offer. Considering the challenges that this type of course presents (particularly to a beginner we should add), it probably won’t come as a surprise to read that this is quite off-putting for a lot of people.

Well, let’s debunk this. Sure, links courses do exist – but they do in a lot of countries. The UK has plenty of other types of courses and you only have to take a look at the Belfry, where the Ryder Cup has been held, to understand this.

In short, links courses are available, but you are selling yourself very short if you are only targeting these in the UK.

Myth #2 – You can’t play on the championship courses

This next myth is sometimes branded around because of the reputation of golf as a whole. Some golf courses do have a “closed” membership scheme, where it becomes nigh-on-impossible to play there.

However, to suggest that this is something which is implemented at the majority of courses would be a gross exaggeration. Nowadays, you can play at the majority of courses that have held a major championship, with the Belfry and Ryder Cup again being a prime example.

In other words, just because it’s hosted an event, it doesn’t mean that you are disqualified from playing at the venue.

Myth #3 – There is only one season

We all know about the jokes about the UK weather, and this immediately leads some to suggest that you can only play in the country in one season (usually between April and September).

Well, here’s a newsflash, the golf courses are actually open all-year around. Not only this, but if you plan your visit in one of the “less fashionable” months, you will pay significantly less than you would if you were playing in the middle of summer. Most golf courses offer huge discounts for playing in some of the less predictable periods of the year – meaning that you can play some of the best courses in the country for a very low green fee.
