Nubra Valley,India

Nubra Valley is located in northeast of Ladakh region, India. It is a high altitude cold desert that has low precipitation and has vegetation along riverbeds. The villages located in this valley are fertile and well irrigated that produces barley, wheat, mustard, peas and variety of fruits and nuts. At the lowest altitude, the western part of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Balti of Gilgit-Balistan as these parts lie near the Indo-Pak border.

To the north of the valley lies the Siachen Glacier and the northwestern comprises of Sasser pass and Karakoram Pass. Places in the valley include the Diskit town that has become the meeting place for the locals. This town is the headquarters of the Nubra Valley and consists of various government offices and is well connected by road to Leh.

The Diskit Monastery maintains the Maitreya Buddha Statue, which is an important landmark of the Nubra Valley. The valley can be reached from the main road passing through the Khardung La pass that remains open throughout the year. This route is considered as the world’s highest motorable road. The river flowing through this valley is the Nubra River that is a tributary of the Shyok River, which eventually flows into the Indus River lying to the east of Skardu, Pakistan.
