Soho House Group to Open First Canadian Property

UK based private members Soho House has announced plans to open their first Canadian property in Toronto this fall, coinciding with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This successful chain of exclusive accommodations was founded in London in 1995, as a private members’ club for those in the film, media and creative industries. The Group has gradually expanded to include Houses across Europe and North America, as well as restaurants, cinemas, spas and hotels. Current North American locations include New York, Miami, and West Hollywood, with a Chicago location to follow Toronto.

Soho House Toronto will be a 10,000 square-foot space located at 192 Adelaide Street West, adjacent to the luxurious recently opened Shangrila property, which they will share services with. As a part of the unique relationship between the properties, members of Soho House Toronto will have access privileges to many of the Shangri-La Hotel facilities including the screening room, fitness centre, pool, spa, meeting rooms, ballrooms and valet parking.

This location is ideally located just steps from the Bell TIFF Lightbox, headquarters of the two week film festival in September. Following three years of Soho House “pop-ups” during TIFF, opening a permanent facility was a natural progression. The new facility will inhabit Bishop’s Block, a building dating back to the 1800s, which has recently been restored replicating the original structure as one of Toronto’s first hotels. This building was originally built as apartments by butcher John Bishop in the early 1830’s, and later became a bar known as the Pretzel Bell Tavern. Prior to this acquisition this historic property sat empty for nearly 30 years.

As part of the Group’s aggressive growth strategy, Mumbai, Istanbul, and Barcelona are also slated for openings over the next two years. The expansion announcement comes five months after London-based entrepreneur Ron Burkle acquired a major stake in the Group and assumed the role of chairman. This investment, combined with the strong financial performance of the Group led by Jones, has perfectly positioned the business to launch its second phase of expansion following the successful 2010 move into the U.S. and Berlin.

To apply for membership, prospective members need to download and complete an application form for the House closest to where they live or work. Each applicant must be nominated by two existing members who can belong to any of the Houses.
