The Dos and Dont’s of Resort Etiquette

by Cara Waterfall

Tripadvisor released its annual beach and pool etiquette survey based on feedback from 1,100 U.S. travellers. A whopping 82 per cent thought that people often violate beach or pool etiquette—and 30 per cent weren’t shy about sharing their opinions with the culprits.

It got our intrepid Travel Editor thinking: what are the dos and don’ts of resort etiquette? Although it dovetails with beach and pool etiquette, resorts have additional rules to observe. Here is our comprehensive list:

DO research the resort’s tipping policy.

The road to tipping etiquette is littered with the gaffes of visiting tourists, so don’t forget to ask the resort about its policy when you book. You can also check a travel guide if you would like to know the country’s tipping etiquette. And remember: if you take outside excursions or tours, chances are the drivers and tour guides will be expecting tips.

DON’T monopolize the beach chairs and cabanas.

This was one of the top pet peeves on Tripadvisor: 85 percent thought it was unacceptable for people to leave their possessions on beach chairs or cabanas for hours on end. Beach chairs are for people, not only possessions.

Dreaming of a beach vacation? Take inspiration from some beautiful beaches from around the world.

DO preserve a respectable distance from the next beach blanket.

The Tripadvisor survey indicated that 26 per cent thought travellers should sit at least six feet apart on a crowded beach; 38 per cent thought that 20 feet was an acceptable distance on a crowded beach. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t encroach on other people’s personal space—their proximity will dilute your vacation jubilation.

DON’T ask a stranger to apply suntan lotion.

Seventy-seven per cent of people surveyed by Tripadvisor said this was unacceptable—and we agree; this one’s a no-brainer!

DO watch your booze intake.

Alcohol flows like water at resorts so it can be easy to over-drink. Balance your Whiskey Sours with your water or you’ll quickly become dehydrated. Sunstroke is no way to make the most of your vacation.

DON’T smoke on the beach.

Smoking was the second-biggest pet peeve in Tripadvisor’s 2009 survey, but dropped off this year’s list. Still, 83 per cent believe smoking should be banned around the pool, while 64 per cent believe it has no place on the beach. After all, who needs the heat and stench of smoke in 30-degree weather? But perhaps if you use those discreet vaping devices (similar to www.davincivaporizer.com), you should be ok. I mean it’s vapor and not smoke. Plus those e-liquid juices does smell better than combusted smoke from cigarettes.

DO reserve your passion for the bedroom.

Amorous couples (especially the newly amorous) tend to operate in a euphoric vacuum. Eliminate public displays of affection that cross the line from affectionate to vulgar. It’s not only tacky, but it makes other people uncomfortable.

DON’T forget to shower before entering the pool.

Thirty-two per cent of those surveyed thought it was in bad taste not to rinse off before going into the pool. Sweat, salt, and suntan lotion are the kind of cocktail a pool can do without.

DO remember that bathing attire is not suitable for dining.

Less is not more when you’re entering certain establishments like restaurants and stores. It only takes a few seconds to throw on a tunic.

DON’T be guilty of noise pollution.

Whether it’s the raucous roar of your stereo, iPod or conversation with others, remember to keep the volume at a respectable level—not everybody is keen on hearing your views on Will & Kate or the resort buffet.

The final, golden rule? DO treat the resort like your home away from home—and your fellow vacationers as you would like to be treated. It’s the best recipe for a fulfilling getaway.
