Behind the scenes of Batman Begins

Bruce Wane outside his mansionThe movie begins and we see the infamous Bruce Wayne as a rugged, destroyed man in the prisons of Bhutan.  After being thrown in prison, a mysterious figure named Henri Ducard (played by Liam Neeson) asks him about his greater purpose in life and extends an offer to help him find it.

After getting kicked out of his Bhutan jail, Wayne finds himself looking for Ducard.  This mountainous, glacier-like region of Bhutan was actually filmed in Iceland at the Vatnajokull glacier.  Here, the film crew built a small village and Ra al Ghul’s temple.

The home that was to play Wayne Manor in Batman Begins was a difficult choice and was chosen from 20 locations.  The home that became Wayne Manor was Mentmore Towers which was built in the mid 1800’s in Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.

Other scenes like the Batmobile chase were filmed in the streets of Chicago, notably Lower Wacker Drive and Franklin Street Bridge, which was raised for a scene in the movie.  The directors liked Chicago as Gotham so much that their next film, Batman: The Dark Knight was by-and-large filmed throughout Chicago.

Many other scenes were filmed in studios.  For example, the Batcave was built at Shepperton Studios in England and was 76m x 37 m x 12 m high.  12 water pumps were installed to create a waterfall and the rock walls were carved of molds from real caves.

The “Narrows,” which were inspired by parts of Kowloon in Hong Kong, and Gotham’s monorail, were both built at an airplane hanger in Cardington, Bedforshire.
