Top Canada + U.S. travel picks for New Year’s 2008-2009

With the economy in recession, Canadians and Americans alike are cautiously reconsidering whether to get away for a Christmas or New Year’s holiday or vacation, no matter how many great travel deals there may be.

In the case of a New Year’s getaway, people are looking to destinations and cities outside the typical party destinations – to places where they can have fun, stay close to home and stick to their budget – all at the same time.

Canadians are still travelling strong all over the world!

Although Canada has been feeling some economic strain for a few months, Canadians are still travelling this holiday season.  With a unique, international and multicultural makeup, Canadians will be flying all over the world for vacation and to head home or to their country of origin to visit family for the holidays.

New Years eve night at Nathan Phillips SquareNew Year’s in Canada.  For those looking to stay in Canada for New Year’s celebrations, many are researching how to spend their time in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal.  Toronto offers a free outdoor concert at Nathan Phillips Square with fireworks at midnight, as well as New Years Eve parties at a multitude of clubs.  Vancouver offers fireworks and fun at Stanley Park Pavilion, while Montreal has an unparalleled club scene during New Year’s.

New Year’s outside of Canada.   When Canadians think of travelling outside Canada for New Year’s this year, they’re looking to Las Vegas, Nevada, first and foremost with New York City and Chicago not far behind.  Cheap deals for Las Vegas accommodations and flights and the hot New Year’s Eve party scene are bringing Canadians to Vegas – not to mention the glamour of not-so-cheap New Year’s Eve parties at high-end clubs with hosts like Paris Hilton or Jay-Z.  Internationally, Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia are also on Canadian travellers’ minds, as are New Year’s cruises.

New Year’s after New Year’s?  Another big item that travellers are researching in Canada for New Year’s is celebrating other cultures’ New Year’s taking place later during the year.  For example, Chinese New Year takes place on January 21st this year and many have been looking at spending this festive time in Toronto or Vancouver.
