Visit and experience Oxford University this summer

This summer, experience a one-week adventure at Oxford University: the oldest university in the English-speaking world with the Oxford Experience, taking place a Oxford University’s Christ Church campus.

From July 5 to August 8, 2009, one-week programs are being offered for those looking to take part in the historical and prestigious experience of attending Oxford University.  The program will cost approximately $1,485, savings of almost $500 of last year’s cost.

The Oxford Experience at Christ Church College in July & August 2008

Christ ChurchThe Oxford Experience is designed for anyone who would enjoy or be interested in an Oxford University summer course and will be taking place in Christ Church, one of the most beautiful and prestigious of Oxford colleges.

Participants will have the chance of attending the oldest university in the English-speaking world, live in rooms where English prime ministers and poets once lived and dine on High Table in the magnificent Hall. Many participants-especially Americans and Europeans-take a one-week course.  Those from Australia, South Africa and the Far East tend to sign up for two or three of the five weeks.

There are no tests, and no papers – just small study groups of like-minded people taught by friendly tutors.  The 50-plus selection of courses includes subjects such as The Life of Sir Winston Churchill, English Country Houses, Charles Darwin and The Origin of Species, Enjoying the Cotswolds, History of the English Language, Exploring the Human Brain, The Life and Music of Handel, The Crusades: Cross versus Crescent, The Beatles, Popular Music and Sixties Britain and The Garden in Art.

Included in the price are tuition, accommodations and all meals (a full English breakfast, buffet lunch and served three-course dinner). Participants attending for two or more weeks are given free bed and breakfast accommodation in Christ Church over the intervening weekend(s). There are additional charges for excursions and rooms with private bath.

Most courses provide excursions to, for example, stately homes, cathedrals and museums and on some afternoons tours of Christ Church and the city of Oxford are offered. In the evening there might be a pub crawl, a special lecture, wine and croquet in the Master’s Garden and Evensong in the college chapel, which is also the Oxford Cathedral.  Once a week each participant is invited to dine on High Table and on the final night everyone gathers for champagne in the flower-filled Cathedral Garden and a celebratory dinner in Hall.

It’s easy enough to get to Oxford: The Oxford Bus Company offers frequent service to Oxford from London as well as Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and there are trains from London’s Paddington Station.  The journey from Heathrow by bus or rental car takes about 70 minutes.

The deadline for registration is May 1, 2009, but early application is recommended. For more information go to www.conted.ox.ac.uk/oxfordexperience.
