Latvian Museum of Natural history

Latvian Museum of Natural History is the oldest and largest history and science museum in the Baltics.

Founded by Riga Balto-German in 1845, Latvian Museum of Natural History in the Baltic States houses a massive collection of natural history. Protecting, preserving and exploring natural collection along with arranging temporary and permanent exhibition are the main objective and mission of the museum.

Collection here includes some 600 samples of minerals, tropical seashells, fossils, rocks, herbaria, and mammal and butterfly collection. Latvian museum of Natural History features a wide collection of items and objects related to geology, paleontology, botany, zoology and entomology. The Botany collection here displays over 31,000 units displaying herbarium whereas on the other you can see around 43, 000 units of collections related to minerals and rocks in The Geology collection.

The Paleontology collection includes 2 million year old fossils and 10,000 years old animal bones on the other The Entomology Collection features around 63,000 units of collection related to beetles and butterflies. The zoology collection represents 27,000 units of various bird species of Latvia.

Permanent exhibitions are regular part of museum that includes exhibits of sea life, botany, birds, mammals and others. Museum also conducts various educational activities, shows and events to provide useful information to its guests.
