Paulis Lazda, Professor of history in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire projected the concept of establishing a museum related to the period of 1940-1991 in front of ministry of culture of Latvia. After 1993, the museum had its first opening in the building of Latvian Red Riflemen’s Museum. Main aims of the museum is to protect the history of occupation period of Latvian people in accordance to providing information and educating people regarding results and history of Latvian occupation period.
Collection and various exhibitions of the museum represent the life of the Latvian people during occupation period. Permanent exhibition features the struggle period of Latvians people during occupation period along with this other displays includes tribute paid to the people contributed in the Latvian new independence fight. On the other temporary exhibitions of the museum displays the tragedy of Latvia 1941 and Rumbula Anatomy of a crime 1941.
Besides, museum conducts regular school activities and educational programmers to provide information and make students aware of occupation history of Latvia. Highlight of all these activities and programs are lectures given by experts on Latvia’s occupation period.
Museum of occupation of Latvia gives the opportunity to learn about Latvia’s recent destination that makes is one amongst top tourist destination of Latvia.
