Old Cathedral of Managua

The Old Cathedral of Managua is situated in the east of the Republic square in front of the fountain in the city of Managua in Nicaragua. In 1972, earthquake completely destroyed the church and left it as a ruin. The earthquake killed thousands of people and made the structure unsafe. The facade of the Old Cathedral may look impressive, but you can see there is nothing left inside this structure. One of the most interesting information about the cathedral is that an architect in Belgium did originally not design it; in fact, it was shipped from Belgium to Managua and reconstructed on the site.

The cathedral was closed to the public because the government feared collapsing. However, people can walk around the cathedral and get an idea of this remarkable building. All the original decorations, statues, and tapestries remain inside. Now, authorities have begun to move toward renovation of the monument.
