Just as Winnipeg is a surprisingly Top-Notch Destination for Families, my recent visit to Winnipeg also revealed that it’s also a great spot for arts and culture.

So, if you’re looking for inspiration, these attractions in Winnipeg, Manitoba offer hours of entertainment and insight for adults and children alike.

A morning of arts & culture in Winnipeg

Inside the Costume Museum of CanadaStart your morning with a visit to the Costume Museum of Canada is a one-of-a-kind place for a casual morning museum visit.  The museum’s collection first began in 1953 as a happy accident when the Dugald Women’s Institute began fundraising for the community by putting on a fashion show.  Pieces of old antique clothing and handicrafts were donated by the community for the fashion show and soon, the historical collection from all over Canada quickly grew into a museum in the 1970’s.  Just two years ago, the collection became the Costume Museum of Canada and was moved to Winnipeg.  Today, the collections and exhibits that change every 10 weeks look at the history of clothing, materials, and the way society and fashion work together.  If you’re lucky, you may get a glimpse of the Queen Victoria’s knickers. Go to www.costumemuseum.com for more.

For the rest of the morning, spend some time on a Walking Tour of the Exchange District that looks at the district’s historical buildings and how they have been transformed to make Winnipeg’s art district.  While you’re there, be sure to stop off for a coffee at the Fyxx Espresso Bar or Mondragon Coffeehouse; or a light lunch at many of the Exchange’s restaurants and cafes.  Go to www.exchangedistrict.org for more.

An afternoon of arts & culture in Winnipeg

Winnipeg Art GalleryA relaxing afternoon awaits you at the Winnipeg Art Gallery or more affectionately known as the “WAG” by locals.  The WAG houses the world’s largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art, part of which is always on display, as well as prominent works by Canadian artists.  Stoll through its multiple international collections and exhibitions or enjoy the weather in its outdoor rooftop sculpture garden & cafe.  Go to www.wag.ca for more.

If you’re visiting Winnipeg from June to September, another fun afternoon arts attraction is the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park where you can take in the sunshine and free live entertainment, dance, plays, and music.  Be sure to see the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden this time of the year when everything is in bloom.  Go to www.assiniboinepark.ca for more.

An evening of arts & culture in Winnipeg

As the day winds down, the best is yet to come with a dinner and a theatre show.

You won’t regret making dinner reservations at Mirlycourtois‘ stylish second-floor dining room.  Here, you’ll experience traditional French cuisine by the Michelin-starred Chef Bernard Mirlycourtois, arguably one of the best chefs in Manitoba.  Don’t miss out on his famous quiche lorraine or other classic dishes like coq au vin, lobster bisque, or escargots.  Go to www.mirlycourtois.ca for more.

After you’ve had your fill, make your way to the Manitoba Theatre Centre just a few minutes’ walk away for a show.  The theatre was Canada’s first English-speaking regional theatre and offers dozens of classic and modern plays each year at both the John Hirsch and Tom Hendry Theatres.   Go to www.mtc.mb.ca for more.
