Cahora Bassa Dam is located in Tete, Mozambique. The dam is located about 80 miles northwest of Tete, Mozambiwue. It was built between the year 1969 and 1979 by the Portugese colonial government of Mozambique. It is 171 meters high and 303 meters wide. Lake Cahora Bassa confines inside the dam that is 150 miles long and 19 miles wide. The total area covered by the lake is 51,075,000 acre-feet and borders with Zambia and Mozambique.
The water accumulated in the dam is used as a source of electricity producing 1,760MW of power, for which the dam makes use of a set of five turbines each rated to generate up to 415MW of power. The dam has a flood discharge at the lower third of the wall. It consists of eight wall passages that throw water jet 300m high into Flussbett.Cahora Bassa Dam is the largest hydroelectric scheme in South Africa. The dam feeds power to two converter stations, one in Songo in Mozambique and the other one located at Apollo in South Africa. The two converter stations are connected via two parallel power lines, which cover a distance of 1400km and work at 533kV.
