Copan Ruins

Copan Ruins are located towards the western part of Republic of Honduras. The ruins are quite substantial and are the major tourist attractions in western Honduras. Diego Garcia de Palacio discovered the Copan Ruins in 1570, and the site is one of the most magnificent sites of the Maya Civilization. The site was the political centre and cultural focus of a large territory that covered the southeast portions of the Maya area. The most important feature of the site is the Petroglyph Staircase, made up of stone on the side of 30-meter high pyramid structure.

Today, the site comprises of a main square of ruins with various complexes encircling it. The main complex consists of essential plazas and Acropolis. The sculpture of Copan appears to have attained a high degree of perfection. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The design of its temples, plazas, terraces, and other features represent a type of architectural and sculptural complex among the most characteristic of the Classic Maya Civilization. The site represents one of the most spectacular achievements of the Classic Maya Period because of the number, elaboration, and magnitude of its architectural and sculptural monuments.
