Situated in the old town of Zurich, the Great Cathedral is an Evangelical Protestant church, aside from being one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. It is one of the three major churches of the city. According to a legend, Charlemagne founded the Grossmunster. The construction of this church began in 1100, and it was inaugurated around 1220. The major renovation took place in the 16th century, which introduced new-Gothic twin towers. Between 1913 and 1915, all renovations were completed.
The major attraction of the church is its three storey twin towers. The one of two towers is the Karlsturm. From the nave, around 187 stairs lead up to the tower’s vantage point from where visitors can have awe-inspiring views over the Zurich rooftops and lake. Visitors can access the church from the sloping Zwingliplatz on the north side. The north portal has some amazing Romanesque carvings of plants and animals. Moreover, around other side, the south portal has some lovely doors with panels of biblical scenes.
